Senator urges FDA to ban menthol-flavored cigarettes

Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-Conn.) is calling on the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) to ban menthol-flavored cigarettes.

In a letter addressed Monday to the FDA, Blumenthal said the agency should ban menthol cigarettes because they encourage young people to smoke.

“The dangers of menthol tobacco products in general, and to our youth in particular, are highly concerning, and provide abundant grounds for FDA to develop a plan that will result in the removal of menthol from tobacco products to protect public health,” Blumenthal wrote in the letter, addressed to FDA Commissioner Margaret Hamburg.

Blumenthal is seeking a ban identical to the one imposed in 2009 on cigarettes flavored to taste like chocolate, vanilla, clove and strawberry.

Blumenthal cited a study completed by the federally established Tobacco Products Scientific Advisory Committee (TPSAC) earlier this year that found that menthol flavoring, like other flavoring, makes tobacco usage more attractive to young people.

“It is well-documented that the restriction of access to tobacco products directly impacts youth smoking rates and that FDA should take strong action to prevent tobacco companies from using menthol cigarettes to increase the number of youth who smoke," said Blumenthal.

So true, yet many will die “free men” I fear. There is no other choice being left to “liberty lovers”. Soon there will be no room left to retreat.

The Congressional Black Congress is 110% behind and pushing for the ban on menthol cigarettes....of which their targeted smoking constituents smoke a greater proportion of menthols compared to other populations demographics in the united states.

It’s an intergalactic nanny state!

Life was INFINITELY better when people could smoke in a grocery store, and drop the butt on the floor to be stepped on. The life expectancy went through the roof, and people were not fat. Now, we worry every day how to squeeze one more day out of life, instead of putting more life into our day.

It’s my understanding that Menthol ciggies get their flavor applied to the paper - not the tobacco.

Actually it is in the filter. Kools were the first menthol and the first filter cigarette.

I have never seen menthol flavored applied to the paper - however that does not mean it does not exist. However, when we switched from tobacco company cigarettes to RYO we found both menthol filter tubes and menthol tobacco.

I'm sure with a bit of experimentation menthol tobacco can be created with the addition of a simple kitchen ingredient or 2 --- such as extracts or essential oils.

Where there is a will, there is a way.

And the Mexican border is perfectly safe.

removal of menthol cigarettes from the marketplace would benefit the public health.”

So what? the removal of alcoholic beverages from the marketplace would also benefit the public health. Are they in a rush to ban alcohol? No. That’s because most people drink, while only about 25% of people smoke. This is tyranny of the majority, an ugly trait. Leave the smokers alone until you’re equally prepared to ban EVERYTHING that is a danger to public health. http://www.cigarettespub.net/
