Einstein’s granddaughter dies in poverty despite famous grandfather

Evelyn Einstein had a difficult life, never able to cash in on the notoriaty and riches her famous grandfather amassed in his lifetime and beyond. Now dead at 70, her fight to gain control of some of that which she felt was rightfully hers, dies too.

Evelyn Einstein, who was the adopted daughter of one of Einsteins natural born sons, experienced poverty and homelessness and was a self-proclaimed “dumpster diver,” all while the estate of her famous grandfather — one of the most iconic figures of all time — earned millions.

According to her obituary in The New York Times, the younger Einstein spoke four or five languages and earned a master’s degree in medieval literature from Berkeley, yet she lived in squalor.

Working occassionally as a dog catcher, a cult deprogrammer and a police officer, Evelyn Einstein was destitute after her divorce. She was married for 13 years to eccentric professor Grover Krantz, a Washington State University anthropologist who attempted to prove Big Foot existed.

After the divorce she was known to live in her car and scavenge for food out of dumpsters.

In the later part of her life, she made it known that her brilliant, yet eccentric, grandfather did not leave a penny to her or anyone else in the family. Instead, after his death in 1955, his estate, including 75,000 papers and other items were willed to Hebrew University in Jeruselum.

The elder Einstein’s name and likeness draw annual earnings of $10 million, according to the 2010 Forbes magazine “Top Earning Dead Celebrities” list. He ranks eighth after Michael Jackson (1), Stieg Larsson (6) and Dr. Seuss (7).

All royalties go to the Israeli university for scholarships and research.

Just before her death this year, she fought Hebrew University for some of the estate’s profits.

“I’m outraged,” said Evelyn Einstein, who told CNN that she wanted the money to move into an assisted living facility. “It’s hard for me to believe they would treat the family the way they have, which has been abysmally.”

Was she related to the real Einstein or the Yahoo Serious version?

Gee, with a master’s degree in medieval literature, you’d think she could write her ticket to wealth. (Did she ever pay off her student loans?)

master’s degree in medieval literature from Berkeley

I think I may see a root cause...

He gave the money to a university? Well, I suppose it’s his money and he can do with it what he pleases, but why would he leave his family in squalor?

Perhaps we’re not getting the entire story here. If she was a dumpster diver, perhaps she was mentally ill or otherwise incapable of holding down a normal job?

There are many questions left unanswered here in my mind.

Given her "education," that's no surprise.

Well this woman never learned an important lesson, nobody owes you a living. She made poor choices in life and paid for it, tough.

It’s funny that she looks so much like him, considering that she was the adopted child of his natural son.

Granted, but still, the fact that he gave his money to a university rather than taking care of his family, only reflects the other things I have heard about him: He was an arrogant, heartless, and selfish SOB. In other words, a typical socialist.

Hmm. Some bad life-choices may explain her predicament when she was living. Mayb there are thousands of jobs for people with medieval lit degrees that I don't know about?

She was a highly educated and learned woman and yet she lived on the street and died in poverty. Sorry sister that was not your grandfather’s fault, it was yours.

I don’t think he left her in squalor...any more than my parents left me in squalor by not leaving me anything. I would think that degree in medieval literature from Berzerkely would be worth something.

It sounds like she just went downhill after marrying some other Ivory Tower genius.

ONE: Don't plan your life around living off some relatives money unless they hire you to work for them.Especially if they were widely known to be eccentric.

TWO:Do expect that you will have to work at something in order to support yourself, especially if you are not a member of the heritary welfare class sponsored by the Democrats.

THREE :Don't expect to make a living doing something no one cares about.

Wonder what languages she spoke? Translators should be able to find some work.

Not to mention her choice in men...

So?? What does that have to do with it? Nothing. Your success in life does not depend on getting a windfall from a parent or grandparent. It is their money to use as they please. Not yours.
