Trump To Megan McCain And Her Dad: I Like You
Newsmax ^ | 04/22/2011 | Dan Weil

Real estate mogul/reality TV star Donald Trump, who is considering a bid for the Republican presidential nomination, has fond feelings for the 2008 nominee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona. The Donald makes that clear in an interview with McCain’s daughter Meghan for The Daily Beast.

Meghan McCain “I like you and I like your father, I’ll tell you. And I like your mother. I like your whole family. Hey, look, I supported your family, right?” Trump says.

“To be honest with you, Bush made it so bad that Abraham Lincoln couldn’t have beaten Obama. The world was crashing! If you remember six months before, your father was way up.”

Despite Trump’s strength in polls, including a Newsmax tally, Trump says those surveys understate his support.

“One of the pollsters actually said to me that my numbers would be better — and I’m leading in just about every poll — if people thought I was going to run, because a lot of people don’t think I’m going to run.”

You mean, “Why don’t I attack and put him down with rude, punitive and negative remarks?”

Because I don’t believe in presenting myself that way. Probably out of respect for others above all else. Whether I agree with them or not.

Our enemy is not each other here, it’s out there and in the White House, or the establishment GOP.

DUH he’s right about Bush. That should have been implied with being right about Rove.

Problem is, his problems with Bush are probably not YOUR problems with Bush, should dig into it.

Aria said these two stunningly contradictory statements back to back:

“I think in theory the idea of universal care sounds a whole lot better than it turns out to be in reality and lots of people don’t get that right away.

I’m so sick of this whole idea of the government’s obligation is to take from those who work to take care of those who won’t - all filtered through an unmanageable bureaucracy and a putrid soup of political correctness and paybacks. UGH! It’s nothing more than tyranny by our “public servants” (what a joke that phrase has become)”

Do you not understand that any “universal” system will be government run and therefore the exact thing you hate in your second sentence?????????

That’s what I meant - if you’re not a real conservative and you hear “universal health care” and you think oh great - no one goes without. And I do believe that is what they think - with their pie in the sky view of the world.

But the reality is that in practice we inevitably end up with rationing and death panels as we’ve seen in Europe and England. The bottom line I see is government cannot make life fair.

Those are your words, not mine. Nice diversion tactic, but it won't work. I asked you, why do you keep defending Trump? An honest straight forward question. Since it upsets you, leave the faithful criticism and hardball political rhetoric to me. Okay?

Trump is one of America's premier egotists and narcissists. Right up there with Obama. As potus, Trump has told us how he would govern. Trump would be a liberal on domestic policy and pushing an imperialistic foreign policy. Trump is Giuliani and Romney on steroids --- A Rockefeller Republican gone wild! Anything is possible with Trump. Inclduing a third party run, if he should get pissed at the GOP for not nominating him.

STOP defending this cretin.

You don’t want them attacking you, so you do this. It’s politics.

I thought Trump was fearless.

Trump to Megan McCain and her dad: I like you ...

... I'd like you even more if you'd try talking in an Eastern European accent ...

... you, I mean, not your dad ...

... c'mon baby ...

I am not upset, and I am not defending Trump like you think. You are confusing analytical extrapolation with advocation. I have complimented some of the things that Trump has been doing for us and giving him credit were it is due. He has done our cause a great service in several very important areas.

But my overall synopsis is that Trump has no intention of running with this all the way. Trump is Trump. He cannot and will not change his basic character. He may have changed his outlook of Abortion, etc, but he is still the incurable Populist that he has most always been and shares no real Political ideal with Conservatives.

He has no intention of taking on the Presidency. He is merely out to take Obama down any way he can and I am all for it. Our real candidate will step up after he paves the way. That is what I believe.

That raises the question if any conservative can win with the relentless pounding of the Obama loving media? We already know they’ll turn on their favorite RINO to help out the black communist.

Thanks for clarifying Aria, and if I misunderstood then “my bad.”

In my opinion, Trump falls outside of what you and I believe on this. His inclination is towards big government and entrenched big business getting in bed together to solve problems. That is not a small government free market Constitutional inclination in my estimation.

Thus my lack of support for Trump, though I am thoroughly enjoying his candidacy to this point and I admire his unabashed love of America.

Most of what you say is true. It’s what’s missing that skews some of your predictions. Ross Perot, for all his appeal to Conservatives otherwise, was pro-abortion. This single flaw killed millions of votes, mine one of them. Despite what many of the Ayn-ers say, U. S. Conservatism is now, and always has been, an amalgamation of social, fiscal, foreign, and domestic policy based on a Christian ethos. Since Roe, the GOP has never successfully run a pro-abort candidate, nor has it elected weak or inarticulate pro-life supporters. Think Ford, Bush Sr., Dole, McCain. Yes, McCain’s (and to a lesser extent, Dole’s) voting record recommended him, but interviews on the subject contradicted his bona fides. Bush Sr’s problem was no voting record and Barbara. Perot was bad news on two counts: he not only took votes from Bush, he stifled the Christian vote.

If Trump were a real patriot, he’d throw his considerable wealth and media-magnetism at an electable GOP candidate.

I am not confusing anything. Fact is, Trump is the one engaging in obfuscation.

The other day I gave you the benefit of the doubt because you are a fellow FReeper in good standing and believe conservatism is best for America. But you are defending Trump. Why? Because you want to keep your options open. You said he wouldn't run a 3rd party effort. Says who? Trump! That shows a level of trust that is not consistent with Trump's history.

>>>>>>He may have changed his outlook of Abortion, etc,...

More defense of Trump.

While I give you and some others around FR the benefit of the doubt, generally speaking, conservatives should not be running around giving liberals like Trump, Romney and Giuliani the benefit of the doubt on naything. Its the job of FReepers to speak the truth.

I still see that little attention getting headline as just that.

I don't trust Trump either, he IS a Liberal and has some extremely damaging ideals, especially his views on Single Payer medical, etc,. No need to list them, there are way too many of them to bother with. His negatives far outweigh his positives. I do not dispute that.

It's the Moderates and Independents, the Populist aspect from both parties that are fueling his current rise. But don't worry, that won't last long. The meat and bones of a Political campaign do not suit Trump. He is not the kind who will stand outside Iowa Town Halls in the pouring rain to shake hands with Farmer Pudknocker.

He is just a headline grabber and a sensational one liner who will fizzle out quickly. And we can take advantage of it if we do this right. Now do you understand me a bit better?

>>>>>Now do you understand me a bit better?

Now I understand, you're saying what you think I want to hear, so I get off your back. LOL

Look, I already posted, I gave you the benefit of the doubt. That doesn't mean you aren't keeping your options open on Trump and it doesn't mean you'll stop defending Trump as you weave you way through the free speech minefields of this forum.

As for Trump running, I don't know. Neither does the many high profile pundits and prognosticators in the media or all the political junkies and opinionators here on FR.

All I ask is we don't feed Trump's farcical adventure into lunacy by giving him the benefit of the doubt or by defending him.

He will drop out, rather than go 3rd party.

You only know that because he said it. And the expiration date on anything the Donald says can be counted in hours rather than days or months.

That is possibly true...there are a lot of factors, I only dove down through a couple.

I find Trump interesting, but in the same way I find Jim Traficant interesting.

I have to admit that I am wondering this as well.

I am not yet convinced our country cannot survive long term, but The conclusion that I came to after the last election in 2008 has instilled in me and some serious doubts.

It isn’t just the desire for “change” that bothers me, I think that’s natural and normal in the electorate. It’s that our country could elect a man about whom nothing was known, and what was known was disturbing in its own right.

And what bothers me is what that says about the electorate, because it sure isn’t complementary. It’s disastrous. After that, do we have a chance at turning the electorate around?

I was only semi-joking about being zotted, I don’t think we have yet got to the point on Free Republic where people who have reservations about the wisdom of promoting someone like Donald Trump as our Savior are being purged from the system… :-)

But as you can tell, I feel very strongly about this. It is my hope that we, as conservatives, can discuss this openly without catastrophic polarization.

Well, I don’t know if I agree with the entirety of what you said, but I won’t dispute it either. It’s not something that is big on my list of things to get to the root of. Water over the dam, I guess.

All I know is, I felt like I made a mistake, and there was no recovering from it. And I see the same thing coming down the pipeline now.

And as I said, I don’t mind that Donald Trump is coming out and saying the things he’s saying about the administration… I just think people need to look back further than a couple weeks into his past.

Indeed yes. And there’s no question Trump and Traficant are “interesting.” But I’d so much prefer a stable, predictable, REAL conservative this time around.
