Early in my dog's training, I began to look for more people who could help us by laying trails for Trooper. Unique to search and rescue, the dogs need people to find when they train. Simple scent articles, like a glove or a hat left at the end of the trail, won't cut it for us. The ultimate result for an operational dog is to find someone who is lost...

dang.. her dog is a dead ringer for our female GSD. Our dog’s trainer does search & rescue for the local authorities. (her husband is a retired sherrif)
We talked about training our female.. but the other half said he doesn’t want to get up at 2 or 3 in the morning to go tromping through the woods. (granted, he’s 70.. so it might be a better activity for someone younger). .. even so, it’s amazing to watch the dogs work. .. thanks for the article.
Well, that’s something I don’t think about every day, but it certainly needs doing. It’s being done very well too, by the looks of it.

What a great activity. How smart of the author to engage the Boy Scouts in his training. Fun for everyone!
I had a Golden Retriever who hurt her back when she was 5. She could no longer engage in boisterous activity (no jumping, etc.) so we thought up new games to keep her entertained. One of her favorites was the “bird” game.
I kept a couple of duck and pheasant wings in the freezer at all times. While someone restrained the dog in another room where she could not see, I would tiptoe forth and hide a wing someplace in the house. Then we’d let her loose and command “find the bird”. It was fun to watch her follow my foot steps until she found the wing. She was right on target every time. The only time I could confuse her is when I took the wing upstairs. But, she’d eventually find the wing upstairs too.
BTW, that Golden lived to 15 1/2 and we played “bird” nearly to the end.
