Energy in America: EPA Rules Force Shell to Abandon Oil Drilling Plans
Fox News ^ | April 25, 2011 | Dan Springer

Shell Oil Company has announced it must scrap efforts to drill for oil this summer in the Arctic Ocean off the northern coast of Alaska. The decision comes following a ruling by the EPA’s Environmental Appeals Board to withhold critical air permits. The move has angered some in Congress and triggered a flurry of legislation aimed at stripping the EPA of its oil drilling oversight.

Shell has spent five years and nearly $4 billion dollars on plans to explore for oil in the Beaufort and Chukchi Seas. The leases alone cost $2.2 billion. Shell Vice President Pete Slaiby says obtaining similar air permits for a drilling operation in the Gulf of Mexico would take about 45 days. He’s especially frustrated over the appeal board’s suggestion that the Arctic drill would somehow be hazardous for the people who live in the area. “We think the issues were really not major,” Slaiby said, “and clearly not impactful for the communities we work in.”

The closest village to where Shell proposed to drill is Kaktovik, Alaska. It is one of the most remote places in the United States. According to the latest census, the population is 245 and nearly all of the residents are Alaska natives. The village, ...

The EPA’s appeals board ruled that Shell had not taken into consideration emissions from an ice-breaking vessel when calculating overall greenhouse gas emissions from the project. Environmental groups were thrilled by the ruling.

“What the modeling showed was in communities like Kaktovik, Shell’s drilling would increase air pollution levels close to air quality standards,” said Eric Grafe, Earthjustice’s lead attorney on the case. Earthjustice was joined by Center for Biological Diversity and the Alaska Wilderness League in challenging the air permits.

At stake is an estimated 27 billion barrels of oil.

The GOP should be hanging this idiocy around Obama's neck from now until November 2012.

At the trials that WILL be held, there will be many sentenced to hang for their crimes. If I have to stretch the rope around some necks myself, I will do it.

The legislative bagmen must have complained to the head of the syndicate that Shell Oil Company has been a little light on their gratitude fees so far this year.

The Enviro-Nuts are forcing a weird choice:

Intead of drilling in strongly regulated and protected US fields, they prefer to force production to come from unprotected dreck-filled environmental disasters like Lake Maricaibo and the Niger River Delta.

And then they tell us they “care about the planet.”

The EPA is all about destroying the American economy, and Ozombie is quite pleased.

We are supposed to be strangled into economic ruin, so that the idiots can implement their “green” economy.

Stuff you, EPA!!!

Well, I guess they need to adjust their modeling since the models right now don't even indicate that the "pollution" would exceed air quality standards. Maybe they can get a government grant to pay for them to fix their models.

But then again, maybe they don't have to do anything because the EPA accepts their word without question.

They are a bunch of useless tools, who don’t care about the planet. They want the oil developed elsewhere, so that our military can be shot at some more. So third world countries will have the development instead of us. Anybody but Americans need to benefit.

Laws passed by about 500 people in the Congress are not half as frightening as regulations passed by one prick heading an agency.

This is just Obama and Stephen Chu plan to have gasoline cost just as much here as it does in John Kerry's beloved France.

And I wonder how these emissions compare with the emissions created by obama's and michelle's junkets on Air Force 1, and al gore's trips to promote anti-global warming efforts?

Couldn't Shell just buy some carbon credits? /S

Environmental groups were thrilled by the ruling. ..............

The socialists are thrilled. This moves us closer to the collapse of our republic and them closer to the reins of power.

"This is idiocy personified."

No, this is the expected outcome from giving leftist scum any sort of power at all. If they weren't making EPA policy, they'd be using whatever regulatory agency they had total control of to do the same thing from a different angle. If the EPA gets reigned in, they'll have new OSHA regs and if that doesn't work, they'll use something else. The entire Federal government is riddled with fascist scum and they're dedicated to tearing down this country and making sure we're no longer the leading world power. Any country that grants majority control of their legislature to fascist democrat thugs for fifty years should expect this. When that country then tops off those decades of corrupt fascist rule by tossing out a Republican majority after only a few years and grants the fascists a super majority in the legislature along with an ineligible, unqualified, narcissist, con man, for President deserves whatever it gets.

I hate that the good people have to pay the price right along with the idiots, but that's what happens when our parents and grandparents listened to "progressives" and granted them the power inherent in the 16th and 17th Amendments. Those two combine to destroy the restraint on Federal power that the Founding Fathers built into the system and we're just seeing the natural result of that gradual undermining of the Constitution. While it's easy to understand why several generations of the good hard working folks who make the country run ignored the constant tacking to the left and just kept their noses to the grindstone is understandable, it's not excusable. Elections alone aren't enough, we have to admit that there have been structural changes that allowed the fascists to get the sort of Federal control they now have. We have to win a long series of elections and retain control of the legislature for a long, long, time to unravel all of this.

As late as the early nineties it could have been turned around with a limited amount of pain and suffering, but now, there will be blood.

Regards

The EPA IS the new SS

Nope, the SS carried guns. The EPA uses the weapon of the Vogons - bureaucracy. Stifling, suffocating bureaucracy.

The EPA’s appeals board ruled that Shell had not taken into consideration emissions from an ice-breaking vessel when calculating overall greenhouse gas emissions from the project.

The EPA did not return repeated calls and e-mails. The Environmental Appeals Board has four members: Edward Reich, Charles Sheehan, Kathie Stein and Anna Wolgast. All are registered Democrats and Kathie Stein was an activist attorney for the Environmental Defense Fund. Members are appointed by the EPA administrator.******

The enviro-nazis are in are now in full-throat and total control of the EPA. The same deep ecology that was central to Nazi ideology has now consumed the EPA.

Either the EPA is defunded or they will destroy the American economy.
