(Vanity) New talk station in FL, Rush Radio 94.7

A trend in radio: news, sports, and talk stations have been simulcasting on, or moving to, FM, or new talk stations have been established. Today Rush Radio 94.7 in Gifford, FL debuted. It had been Star 94.7, a rhythmic adult contemporary station, I think.

They have a local show called The Morning Rush, then Beck, Limbaugh, Hannity, Levin, and Jason Lewis. Clear Channel has been launching Rush Radio in places like New Orleans and Boston (in Boston they later renamed themselves Talk1200 but kept the lineup); sometimes on FM, sometimes on AM (in Boston their two FM stations kept playing music because they're successful so the talk station launched on AM instead.)

Since many people are abandoning AM--signal problems at work, some devices like mp3 players only have FM, better signal reach and quality--we are seeing a move to talk radio (often conservative) on FM. Even if it's a station that continues to broadcast on AM but also launches a translator on FM (Worcester MA, Prov RI, Albany NY, Buffalo NY and many others)

I listen to WABC in New York City. I listen to it over the Internet. The sound quality is excellent.

I hope that we will soon see a 24/7 **conservative** news “channel” that is entirely Internet based. Fox New’s ratings would drop like a rock.

I’ve already checked, and I think you mean 5 GIGabytes per month. Frontier confirmed with me that it would be unlimited and NO cap — I’ll never subscribe to a service that’s capped, even if it means I have to leave home for internet access. We’re former Verizon (former GTE) divested territory obtained by Frontier when VZW swallowed Alltel. Frontier installed the DSLAM just last week so they’re serious.

I should probably add that I’m rural, so my ISP options are next to nil. Right now I have a grandfathered Alltel true unlimited aircard (NO CAP!) that’s now VZW. They’ve gotta hate me, LOL! It’s either that (and a maximum 20KB down) or nothing.

Satellite isn’t broadband. The latency and FAP are murder.

Where is a good place to look for an internet radio? This is something I think I could justify the amount of its cost to my wife.

Sorry about that, you’re right that it was 5 Gigs per month. I hadn’t had my caffeine yet.

Anyway, even at 5 gigs, that’s not a lot of bandwidth. Since you were part of the territory that FTR acquired, I’d say you’d be okay for the time being but you might want to really read up on what is going on with the bandwidth caps now. One other thing to be aware of is that FTR’s DSL service isn’t that great in some areas. I don’t know which of the acquired territories you’re in, but here in WV the service is lousy. Granted, it’s not really FTR’s fault, since VZ let the outside plant infrastructure go to pot before they sold the area off, but that doesn’t change things. I lose my DSL service every time it rains because of the water getting into the cable. Things are getting better all the time, but it’s going to be a long, uphill slog before WV’s telephone service is back up to par with the rest of the nation.

paladin, I understand your problems with DSL, and know WV has been having a heck of a time with service and makes headlines on the Stop The Cap website. I’ve been pursuing alternative internet service for around a year now, bugging the snot out of any and all providers that could possibly push into our area. I’m only 30 miles from Ann Arbor — you’d think *somebody* would cover us by now! Because of all my research I know more about internet deployment, speeds, caps and technology than I ever intended.

We’re new DSL territory for Frontier. It makes a lot of sense for them to expand into our area because Michigan wants to cash in on our campgrounds and rec areas, and a major selling point is internet access. I was so happy to see that DSLAM go up (and they finished it off nicely with fresh concrete, framing and gravel), and it’s within LOS to my house. I’ve also had some back-door help with Connected Nation — yes, I know who they are and they’re government and corporate funded — but given our current situation I’ll take any and all help I can get.

Good luck on getting your improvements to your service. That has to be equally as frustrating as not having service at all.
