The whole area entailing Washington DC and Prince Georges County Maryland ,IS the National Zoo.
The area where the zoo is located is a very high-rent neighborhood in the NW section of the city. I work a block away and can tell you for a fact that property prices in that neighborhood for something decent are well over $1 million.
That said, after getting caught up in the fracas as I was driving home from work yesterday and seeing the violent beat down take place just two cars in front of me, I would NEVER, EVER choose to live in DC. I drive 30 miles in to go to work and I drive home again. That's it.

Be safe out there. And yes, putting up with the brain damage of the commute looks prudent to me.
