Keith Olbermann arriving at Current TV on June 20
Associated Press ^ | 4-26-11

Cable network Current TV says Keith Olbermann will return to the air on June 20.

Current said Tuesday the title of the weeknight news-commentary hour will be "Countdown with Keith Olbermann." "Countdown" was the name of the program Olbermann hosted on MSNBC until his heated departure from that network in January.

Less than a month later, he signed with Current TV, the public affairs channel launched in 2005 by former Vice President Al Gore and Joel Hyatt.

A liberal lightning rod, Olbermann has often clashed with his former bosses and with the corporate culture of General Electric, until recently MSNBC's majority owner. By contrast, Current bills itself as America's only independent news and information TV network.

Current is available in 60 million households in the U.S.

Current is available in 60 million households in the U.S.

That only means it comes in a package some have subscribed to. It doesn't mean they watch it. Also, that's not a big number, IMO.

Cool. A new batch of coworkers for Olbermann to ostracize.

I thought he was going to be broadcasting from a pirate station aboard an old freighter anchored in The Bermuda Triangle?

From an article back in February:

Current's audience is so tiny that the network was not even officially measured by the Nielsen Co. until late last year. Until now, the network was best known for its reporters Euna Lee and Laura Ling, who were detained for five months by North Korean authorities in 2009 until former President Bill Clinton, with whom Gore served, helped arrange their release.

I get Current TV on my cable system. It tries hard to be an informative alternative NPR-ish network. However it is already starting to fill out its schedule with Cops-like filler shows.

Maybe it’s because I live in the country, and don’t have cable or satellite, but I have never heard of this guy. Of course, with all the cable/satellite stations available, there are probably a whole bunch I have never heard of. So tell me, am I missing anything whorthwhile here?

The Good News: Olbermann cannot be blamed for the abysmal ratings that will occur, as CurrentTV’s ratings are already microscopic.

The Even Better News: Keith can give as much as he wants to Democrat candidates as there’s no way CurrentTV has a restriction on that.

The Best News: My Cable carrier does not carry CurrentTV.

Of those 60 million that have it as part of their cable bundle, most don't know what it it, or ever watch it.

The number that do watch on a reg basis is probably in the thousands, maybe some six digit figure on a good day.

(Like when Olberwoman returns).

Yes we have it but I have never watched it and when I remember which channel it is I purposely skip that channel by using the buttons instead of just the arrow.

Poor old Keith Olbermann just has never been able to hold a job long enough to be vested in the retirement package. Now the poor old guy is going to be working for Al Gore Jr. A man that really doesn't have a great reputation when it comes to how he treats his employees.
I wonder which one of them will poop in the others nest first.

I know someone who watched Olbermann and likes him. Needless to say, I have a tense relationship with this person. We are related through marriage.
