SOBERING KNOWLEDGE FROM COPS

The week before last, I attended and taught at the annual conference of ILEETA, the International Law Enforcement Educators and Trainers Association. Despite the economy, the event drew some 725 police trainers from around the country and several other nations, even though a huge number had to subsidize their attendance out of their own pockets.

It is a horrible year for police line of duty deaths. This past weekend alone, at least three cops in different parts of the US were murdered in the line of duty. Much of the emphasis of this year’s training was on Officer Safety and Survival.

The general consensus of police, military, and national intelligence is that it’s only a matter of time before this nation experiences an incident reminiscent of Beslan or Mumbai: armed, trained, committed terrorists massacring the innocent with automatic weapons and explosives. My old friend Jeff Chudwin, Chief of Police in Olympia Fields, Illinois and one of the nation’s leading authorities on such things, gave a compelling presentation on the topic.

At a time when we need more, better-trained and -equipped cops than ever, we’re seeing police layoffs, hiring freezes, and budget cuts. Many of the presenters addressed how to deliver quality training with less money for equipment, ammunition, and pay for officers attending.

For the private citizen, what all this is saying is to be prepared for disaster. Remember Hurricane Katrina, just six short years ago. In a nation where there are only about 800,000 cops to serve an estimated 320,000,000 citizens, it’s absolutely true that when seconds count, the police are only minutes away.

Recall when you need help is seconds, the police are only minutes away. Be not afraid of any man, no matter what his size. When danger threatens, call on me and I will equalize. This is a saying on the trigger guard of some Frontier Colt pistols.

No, it will be worse because in other countries people are told to run and escape when attacks happen. In the US, we tell people to bunker down and take shelter.

The result is Columbine, Virginia Tech, etc where people are slaughtered on their knees.

In Mumbai, two couples at the hotel made a run for it while the terrorists yelled at them to stop and even shot at them. One couple stopped while the other ran for it.

The terrorists executed the couple who stopped and raised their hands. The other couple survived.

Lesson: You are on your own and when you are out-gunned, out-manned and out-classed by the enemy, get out and take your chances. Staying put only raises the liklihood of your execution.

Gone are the days when the hostage-takers let everyone go. Today, they are competing for who can rack up the highest body count.

Maybe someone will come up with an idea for a “civilian defense force” and make it as well funded and trained as our military. (sarc)

Let the citizens remain armed and remove legislation that restricts self defense.

This is BS. There are more cops now than ever. They are armed to max like SWAT teams and almost totally militarized. I can’t drive across our small city without seeing at least 3 or 4 police cars. They sure don’t give me any sense of comfort. Even such departments like Indiana’s DNR has a fully loaded SWAT team. We don’t need any more cops.

I don't think "bunkered down" normally means, disarmed by law. Most of the people I know who have family bunkers, have guns and the knowhow and willingness to use them.

Let's see now. The only terrorists style attack on women and children I can think of, in this country, was committed by the government.

Training is great, but political correctness may be responsible for many line of duty deaths. Forbidden profiling, affirmative action hires, lowering the standards for recruits and yes many women in law enforcement situations where they don't belong. Not to mention wacky judges who continually release scum to the streets

You missed the point.

A bunker is fine if you can defend it.

A bunker is useless if you are facing 30 men armed with machine guns and grenades.

The authorities tell people to stay put and take shelter.....not good advice in most Mumbai-type attacks, which is what we are discussing here.

No he means the “shelter in place” training that most of the government practices. They have these drills in the military all the time and make no sense to me, why put everyone in one or two small spaces if there is an active shooter? It would be like shooting fish in a barrel. Also because of the Ft. Hood shooting they are even more determined to make sure you are disarmed on base.

This story is a bunch of fear mongering in order to boost support for cops and their over priced pensions. The problem is that people are now getting hit with $400-1000 dollar tickets every time they turn around. That doesn’t make people want to support these thugs in blue who will do like they did at V. Tech or Columbine and cower behind some trees with all their expensive SWAT equipment until the shooting stops. Then harass the few people left alive trying to get out with the wounded afterwards.

I have been stopped and not ticketed so many times for manufactured reasons that I will not let a cop follow me. I pull over ASAP, I tell my kids and grandkids not to let them follow them either.

Remember Katrina, folks. Being armed and prepared potentially means being so against the cops as much as it does against looters or rioters.
