Politicians Intervene to Halt Deportation for Mexican Student

Hartford, Conn. (AP) - A Mexican college student who won allies in Connecticut's governor and two U.S. senators as he fought a deportation order will be allowed to stay in the country for now, Sen. Richard Blumenthal said Tuesday.

"With the three of them, I guess they had enough power and enough momentum to be an advocate for me," Cardoso said. "I feel really privileged and honored that they assisted me."

Blumenthal said the Department of Homeland Security called his office to say Cardoso had been granted a stay of removal.

Cardoso, 23, has lived in the United States since his family entered the country illegally when he was 22 months old, eventually settling in New Britain, Conn.

Blumenthal met with him personally, Lieberman's office said it was seeking a solution and Malloy last week asked the U.S. Department of Homeland Security to defer the deportation.

"The merits of this case are so compelling that in his situation, Mariano's situation, this decision was clearly the right one," Blumenthal said.

Malloy said he could not be more pleased with the decision and looked forward to seeing Cardoso build a career in the only country he's ever known.

"That he could not make a decision for himself when he was brought to this country at 22 months of age should not impede his ability to make a better life for himself here, now," the governor said.

Blumenthal said the long-term solution is the DREAM Act, legislation that would provide a path to citizenship for certain young people such as Cardoso who were brought to this country at a young age. It has failed to pass Congress several times, most recently in December.

The Dream Act failed to pass so the current administration just pretends it did anyway. Can anyone say "Obey the LAW, Obama, you communist shill!~ OR adopt them"

The entire East coast of the United States is about as foreign to the rest of the country as is Mexico. What a surprise that Democrats and one Liberal Independent who was shunted by his Democrat buddies think it is okay to open the borders to more illegals.

Hey, I live on the East Coast. This place is not foreign. When it comes to illegal immigrants we don’t hold a candle to Utah, California and Texas (and Colorado even).

America could not have a worse neighbor than Mexico. Imagine what this country could be if we had a legitimate country next door. Sad for us.

This guy should be deported ASAP. If the Dream Act promised to deport thousands of illegal immigrant criminals and gang bangers in exchange for allowing Dream Act kids to stay here....That would be a fair trade
