TRUMP BOMBSHELL: The REAL Reason He Avoided Vietnam
Business Insider ^ | 04/29/2011 | Joe Weisenthal

And this might be why he never runs... not the F-bombs... it sounds like Trump has the quintessential rich politician problem: Vietnam.

According to a new document unearthed by The Smoking Gun: Donald Trump received 4 student deferments, and one medical deferment, which is in contradiction to a previous quote explaining his draft status: “I actually got lucky because I had a very high draft number. I’ll never forget, that was an amazing period of time in my life.”

Technically, that doesn't have to be a lie. Eventually Trump got a high draft number, but it appears that it's definitely not the only way he avoided the war.

Again, that Vietnam service has been an issue for many candidates is known to everyone, and for someone who was born wealthy -- and going to Wharton at the time -- the deferrals look worse.

Many, many, many of our top pols got multiple deferments while they were in college. Looks like Trump got that AND a high lottery number. His being a liberal Democrat, likely stalking horse for Hill, and a danger as a third-party candidate are all issues enough for me. But Viet Nam isn’t the story here.

The election of Bill Clinton renders this topic moot.

Dodging the draft means you did not sign up for selective service, were drafted and refused to report, or went to Canada to avoid the entire situation. A third choice would be to "buy" your way out.

I didn't dodge, I didn't serve because I was not drafted, and did not join. Like 10's of millions like me, I lived a life not caring about "liberating the yellow man". I supported the troops, my brother and at least 9 cousins went to Vietnam. They all told me that if I joined anything but the Navy, I was stupid. The war was a lost cause to nearly all the guys that were "grunts". The reason it was a lost cause, the politicians played games with objectives, ROE, mens lives and the facts. How many POW's did we leave behind? We even left some behind in WW II for political expediency.

I know it sounds like I am a lefty, but I am not. I am just an average American that can SEE the waste of lives and treasure, for no gain. It has not always been so, but since the "smackdown" of McCarthur in Korea, it has been mostly true. I would not have volunteered to "free Kuwait", invade Iraq, or Afghanistan. The false premise shows now, or will be evident soon enough. We fight because we use war as a political tool, not to win a war and vanquish the enemy.

With all that I have written, if I knew then, what I know now about politicians, I would have protested the war in Vietnam.

Yes, the victory was stolen in Vietnam by our own politicians after a negotiated "victory". Communist expansion needed to be opposed, but why with proxy wars with no end in sight? The answer is, Billions for the politicians, money industrialists making arms, training for the professional soldier class, and to inevitably bankrupt the US Treasury.

Sorry, off subject a lot, but the point is, there is a big difference between not serving and being a draft dodger.

“RE: Shouldn’t be any problem to get Obama/Soetero’s should it?

Obama was too young to be drafted to Vietnam.”

Actually this SHOULD be a big problem for Obama. Obama never registered with the Selective Service as he was required to do by law.

During the 2008 presidential campaign Obama’s people issued an obviously fraudulent selective service registration form supposedly from 1980. The MSM covered it up.

I know plenty of conservatives who oppose a conscript army.

How many conservatives do you know, anyway?

Never thought I would meet a conservative who would condone dodging the Vietnam draft.

I guess that depends on what the definition of Draft dodger is. My sergeant in the reserves told me I was nothing but a g-d m-f'n draft dodger..so, I guess I was one...and I'm definitely conservative as they come.

I’m glad the evil liberal Republicans can get this out there early... that way they can clear the way for Mitt Romney!

Lord knows the conservatives aren’t fighting against Trump yet. It’s the liberals on the left, and the liberals on the right who are taking this guy out early.

I read that Trump had a high draft number. Good catch.

Trump and Romney have even more in common now. Rich draft dodging punks.

Hey, I had a high draft number too. It was the draft lottery (I turned 18 the year that started). I would have gone if they called me up, but they didn't, so don't call those of us with high number draft dodgers!

And he managed to get his Senate opponent's divorce records made public.

I'm no lawyer, but that has to be crooked somehow.

Trump and Romney. Both are cowardly draft-dodgers.

I'm looking at his SS record shown on post #1, and the only question I have is what were the reasons for the 1-Y in 1968 then re-classed to 4-F in 1972 (when the Draft ended, BTW)

From 64 to 68, he had the standard student deferment except for one semester in 66 when he was classed 1-A and would have been eligible to be drafted. I'd assume he wasn't carrying enough credits to qualify as a full time student at that point. He apparently finished his undergrad work in 4 years unlike the real draft dodgers who just stayed in school for the duration.

My only question is why the 1-Y in 1968. Did he really have some medical issue or was that a scam?

BTW. 1-Ys could still be drafted if the military really needed warm bodies. I don't think it ever happened during Vietnam but it did during WWII.

"Do people here fundamentally believe that the government has the right to all males of fighting age?"

First, only individuals have rights. Governments have powers and duties granted them by individuals exercising their rights. However, to answer your question Article I Section 8 variously grants Congress has the power to, "...provide for the common Defence..." of the U.S. In order to do so, it is granted the power to, "...To raise and support Armies..." and, "To provide and maintain a Navy." Furthermore it is fully within its powers, "To provide for calling forth the Militia to execute the Laws of the Union, suppress Insurrections and repel Invasions," and finally, "To make all Laws which shall be necessary and proper for carrying into Execution the foregoing Powers, and all other Powers vested by this Constitution in the Government of the United States, or in any Department or Officer thereof."

Certainly, I think a draft in times of national emergency, and quite certainly "to suppress an insurrection or repel an invasion" is well within the powers accorded Congress.

Having said that, I think most small unit leaders in the military would much rather prefer soldiers, sailors, airmen and marines that wanted to be there.

I had forgotten that was a Phil Ochs sing (”I Ain’t Marchin’ Anymore”, et al.). Pretty good lyricist, for a Lefty protest singer.

I graduated from HS in '72. I think my number was around 318. I made sure I wouldn't be drafted by accepting a 4 year ROTC scholarship. ;^)

The reason it was a lost cause, the politicians played games with objectives, ROE, mens lives and the facts.

Sounds like Iraq, Afghanistan, and Libya.

This is the exact document that John Kerry has never released, and his failure to release it is why he lost the 2004 election.

I don't think that can be correct, as the sequence of student deferments Kerry received is known. IIRC it was a "Form 180" that people were always requesting of Kerry.

The Republican candidates in 2012 will be vetted to the depth of a colonoscopy, just as dirty, and as flattering.

To even question the 2012 Dem candidate will draw shrieks of "racism!"

"If your status changed you were given the dreaded 1A designation, i.e. draftable immediately, cannon fodder. at this time the draft dodger label was put into play.

You had three choices: 1. Raise your right hand and join up, 2. Leave the country to dodge the draft (usually Canada), or 3. Refuse to serve, go to jail and become the love object of a rather large man usually called Killer."

I was too young for the draft but I knew many people who were drafted and who served, some in Viet Nam, some other places.

I don't remember a single man from my neighborhood who took options 2 or 3(leave the country or jail).
