War On Terror: More and more Afghans and Iraqis are turning on their coalition partners. Last week's deadly attack on American soldiers by an Afghan military officer should be a wake-up call.
During a meeting at the Kabul airport, a 48-year-old Afghan air corps pilot took out a weapon and fired at his American training partners, killing eight U.S. soldiers and a U.S. contractor.
It was the deadliest attack on coalition forces, but hardly the first. It marked the seventh time this year that members of the Afghan security forces, or insurgents impersonating them, have killed coalition soldiers. In some cases, they've used U.S.-supplied weapons and ammo.
Our troops are extremely vulnerable to these "rogue" attacks, as the Pentagon terms them, as they try to stand up armies and police forces as part of "nation building" in Afghanistan and Iraq.
But they aren't so rogue if viewed all together. A clear pattern is emerging in which the enemy's using security training exercises and joint operations to get close enough to U.S. soldiers to kill them. It's become a common tactic of the terrorists, and they're using it more frequently and successfully.
Instead of doing more to guard against such treachery, such as demanding tighter vetting of recruits, the Pentagon is glossing over the attacks. It attributes many of them to "combat stress" or "unknown reasons," even though the Muslims attackers target American and NATO soldiers.
Before the airport slaughter, the coalition had recorded at least 20 incidents since March 2009 where a member of the Afghan security forces or someone wearing a uniform used by them attacked coalition forces, killing a total of 36. Among recent attacks:

The wake up call was 9-11.
We should have bombed them and bombed them and bombed them and bombed them and....

676 godzillion dollars lost and far too many Americans lives.
For Nothing.
First off - It isn’t the military’s job to “Nation Build!” We break things and kill people and if that isn’t what needs to be done then get the Peace Corps, Greenpeace, or other Leftist Organization.
Secondly - Where are all the news stories with body counts? Does anybody know how many Troops have died on Obama’s watch? Wasn’t he the messiah who was going to “rescue” us from all these illegal wars?
Nov. 2012 can’t get here soon enough!!!!!
Is anybody really surprised when this stuff happens?
I thought the mission in Afghanistan back in 2001 was to capture or kill bin Laden, Zawahiri, and Mohammed Omar. It’s been so long that I had to look up the name of the one-eyed Taliban goober.
Having completely failed in the original mission (as understood by most folks anyway), the US government decided that nation-building was in order. So the US and its NATO allies have occupied Afghanistan on this fool’s errand for almost a decade. Occupying armies have always irritated the locals, and the Afghans have been famous for their irritability since Alexander’s time.
Were the Americans/NATO troops armed?
Blame Jr Boosh. He had this crap set up prior to his departure. He had planned to give everything that our troops won back to our enemies. He was never interested in capturing or killing bin Laden. If that happened, the boogey-man would be gone, along with the justification of DHS and the trashing of Constitutional rights.
Didn't that hammerhead Obama make hay about this very point during the '08 campaign. It's strange that he hasn't managed to capture bin Laden either.
Somebody sure as hell taught him to shoot well.
Like Curtis LeMay once said:”Bomb them til the rubble bounces”

I had no idea that you were so influential!
I try not to abuse it, but darn it! something had to be done!
Dan! You know better! You know how REMF policies are!
It was a building under the control of an upper level Air Force headquarters. There is bound to be a big bright red 55 gallon drum full of sand, half buried at an angle, at every entrance. At best, all the USAF instructors had dutifully unloaded their sidearms at the clearing barrels. At worst, the command requires them carry a weapon, but does not authorize the issue of ammunition.
