Politics: McDonald's announced that it received a million applications across the country for what amounted to 62,000 low-skill jobs. What does that say about the state of job creation in this country?
For 62,000 Americans, the heavy weight of unemployment has been lifted by much-maligned McDonald's, the fast-food giant whose employment opportunities were once belittled by the left during the Reagan era as "McJobs."
As for the 938,000 others, the intolerable world of life without work remains. So let's get one thing straight: There is no such thing as undignified work.
A million people have clearly shown that by standing in blocks-long lines reminiscent of the Great Depression for the chance to cook burgers, drop fries, sweep floors and ring up orders.
But that so many would have to seek such a low-skill, low-wage job under such competitive conditions tells us a lot about what the business climate and the job market are like out there.
Joblessness remains stubbornly high at 8.8%, and twice that if you count those who have dropped out of the workforce. Among workers age 19-29, the jobless rate is 40%; for blacks, it's 15.5%; and in some cities, like Detroit, it's 25.4%.

I guess “shovel-ready” jobs really meant french fry scoops.
You can’t live in a McMansion with a McJob flipping burgers. If you own a McDonald’s you could have a McMansion.
I didn’t realize there was such demand for fast food.
At $7 for a mcburger, fries and a coke, a lot of people aren’t buying anymore.
McObamanomics?
Any job is a great opportunity when you are without one.
I predict the “dollar menu” will be history by the end of this year. Say goodbye to that delicious $1 double cheeseburger.
The dollar menu is already being replaced with “the value menu”
It’s getting bad out there.
Where are you finding a $1 double cheeseburger?
At least these people were looking for work. There’s that.
We need to start looking at Work like the Japanese. “Work is a Privilege”. Be happy in your work!
I remember when Democrats demeaned “burger flipper” jobs during Bush;s recovery. Now, they’re proud of them.
I’ve been to Japan several times.
They wear thin, black ties.
I hate thin, black ties.
I would not be happy wearing thin black ties.
So sorry.
They should be going after Loretta Sanchez D (CA). She was one of the leading bigmouths about job gains during the Bush years.
Any job is a great opportunity when you are without one.

Unless a Republican is in the White House; then anything less than white collar for the agitators is demeaning.
Isn’t that the truth! Great point.
I am at McDonalds rigth now using their WiFi.I got a “senior” coffe for 75 cents, and a McChicken for a dollar, but I also think the dollar menu will not last much longer. I feel obligated to buy something since I use the WiFi. ( I can’t get high speed internet at my house, so this has become my “office” but as gas prices skyrocket my office will start costing more) How can an economy survive if we are just cooking burgers and fries for each other??
I agree, PGalt. It’s real work, and like any job it’s wearying if done with dedication. And for those with the desire to stay in the food service industry, there really can be a substantial reward for moving up.
It’s honest work, and I’ll not badmouth anyone who will work rather than take a government handout.
They are struggling for their independence and I admire that.
It can't.
