I got off the freeway in Miami once and found I couldn’t get back on with no frontage road. I’m in one of the tough black sections of Miami. I followed some signs to a police station, but it was a temporary outpost in a house trailer and it was closed.
It was about 3:00 am and I finally found an open gas station. An old black man was behind the bulletproof glass and he asked me what a white man was doing there, looking to get hijacked and killed?
He gave me directions to get back on the freeway. I felt damn lucky to get out of there.
