Tokyo Electric to Build Seawalls to Protect Fukushima N-Plant
Fukushima, April 30 (Jiji Press)--Tokyo Electric Power Co. <9501> will build temporary seawalls by mid-June to protect its stricken nuclear power plant from tsunami that could occur if a strong earthquake happens again, officials said Saturday.
Based mainly on forecasts by the Meteorological Agency, Tokyo Electric will prepare itself for an aftershock with the maximum magnitude of around 8 on the Richter scale and subsequent tsunami less than 10 meters high, the officials said.
The barriers will be installed on grounds to the southwest of the No. 1 to No. 4 reactors of the Fukushima No. 1 nuclear power plant.
The firm also started work to seal pits connected to reactor-related facilities, in order to prevent any water contaminated with radioactive materials from spilling from the pits if tsunami waves sweep over them, the officials said.
For the spent fuel pool of the No. 4 reactor, the company will erect steel pillars by mid-June and concrete walls by the end of July to support the bottom of the pool whose strength may have deteriorated.
P!
good idea, too bad they did not think of it earlier...
:-)
I hope they are not dithering with this. They should not let 8.0 quake hit while they are still debating how to build the wall.
“Mr. Tepco, build up this wall.”
Well since they were hit with a 9.0 quake.... exactly how would this have helped? The real story must be something else, I assume.
Great, now just be sure that the emergency generators are above 40 feet, ‘cause the earlier site on the ground at 33 feet didn’t cut it!
Man, they’re not catching many breaks, are they?
Information came out that the radiation is at it’s highest levels yet
