Former rep wins state’s hack lottery
By Howie Carr | Sunday, May 1, 2011
| http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

There has been another nationwide search, and let’s go right to the magic number: $103,000.

That’s the salary for former state Rep. John Quinn. He retired from elective politics last year due to ill health — the voters got sick of him. But you can’t keep a good hack down, and now he’s got a new job, a newly created position in fact.

Would you care to guess if it’s the public or the Dreaded Private Sector?

Yes, you guessed it. He is going to work, if you can call it that, for UMass-Dartmouth, as the “director of graduate public service.”

In the Legislature, Quinn was a strong proponent of the massive boondoggle known as the UMass School of Law, which was created as a South Coast hack holding pen out of the ashes of a bust-out private law school.

And now the law school’s big backer, who is also by the way the son of a judge, gets a brand-new six-figure job doing, well, nothing.

The extraordinarily necessary job was created as part of the school’s “civic engagement expansion.”

As I said, he’ll be doing nothing. He ran last year for Bristol County sheriff against the GOP incumbent Tom Hodgson, but it was not to be. The story about Quinn’s new job (as opposed to work) was broken Friday in the Fall River Herald News, and one of the readers perfectly summed up this latest hiring in the hack-erama:

“Hodgson won the election, Quinn won the lottery.”

There’s an old rule of thumb. Anyone who serves more than three terms in the Legislature is almost certainly unemployable in any real job. Quinn served 17 years. Now he can really fatten up that pension of his.

Do you suppose in the course of his arduous academic duties he’ll run in to former Sen. Joan Menard, the newly appointed $120,000-a-year “acting vice president” at Bristol Community College? Joanie is 75 years young. Her daughter makes $110,000 a year as an acting clerk-magistrate.

Perhaps you saw this week that the president of the Mass. state Senate, Therese Murray, has decided that there’s way too much waste in state government. Last year the 18-year incumbent outspent her Republican opponent 10-1 and eked out a 52-48 percent win. This latest gag of hers just proves she’s running for re-election . . . as Barbara Anderson.

Waste, fraud and abuse. Where do you start, Madame President? How about with the drivers for politicians, or does that one hit a little too close to home?

What about all those do-nothing agencies — the regional planning councils. Or the Commission on Judicial Conduct. Fire the staff and just leave a rubber stamp in a drawer somewhere and let the judges write their own whitewashes.

Obviously no one’s serious about any of this “reform.” Quinn, like Menard before him, takes a hit or two in the papers and then fades into the hackerama. Forgotten but not gone. Defeat, where is thy sting?

Thanks RR, Howie does a great job blasting all the hack corruption! It’s just unbelievable how these crooks just keep doing this and the sheep just keep voting them into office. Mass is a prime example of the failure of Democracy, what happened to our Republic?

We are making a big-assed mistake in keeping Howie as a New England asset.

Every state, every county in every state, every federal agency; is run in exactly the same manner as Howie so piquantly describes his fellow Massholes.

Howie, of course concentrates on the cream layer. Under the high-roller hacks, there is a legion, many legions actually, of low-roller hacks who only make in the high 5 figures and whose pensions are only in the mid-5 figure range!

To be fair, the actual work of many agencies (DMV etc) is actually done by mid-5 figure (and lower) people who actually may be required to show up and "serve" you in the desultory fashion we have come to know and love.

Fellow Freepers

WE MUST TAKE HOWIE NATIONAL!

Perusing the weekly scifi thread, William Campbell died last week.

He did a couple of Star Trek TOS epis, and some later ST stuff.

However, he was married to one Judith Campbell Exner.

Do you think Howie will comment on it?

FWIW, Exner last partied in 1999.

Prediction:

Here's what Howie will say,

At least in those days we had a President who knew how to party without inviting every Commie he knew to the White House. And he partied with girls.

BTW, the worst thing JFK did was to convince Bill Clinton by example that one could at least pretend to run the country in under two hours a day, and still have sex with anything that moved. Obama of course, has carried this precedent a step farther by hardly spending any time at all at it. Frankly, I am glad he is so inefficient as an administrator. The damage he hath wrought upon the republic is impressive. But can you imagine what an efficient, evil man could have done in two years with a compliant Senate, House, Judiciary, and MSM?

I'm wondering if the death pool will be today (someone prob had OBL). Howie's FB says he's broadcasting from a bookstore today and I think they may say "death pool off till tomorrow". They do need someone to help handle all the phone calls (take down phone numbers etc. from people after they submit their nominee)

(Howie Facebook)
>>Howie will be broadcasting live from Borders at Legacy Place in Dedham from 3-7pm this afternoon! Be sure to stop by and listen to Howie's reaction on the death of Osama bin Laden. Following the broadcast Howie will be signing copies of his new book 'Hitman'.

Fox News Radio, now on a diff station, said “the NY Post with a front page headline we can’t say on the air”. Curious, went to NYP site: “We got the bastard”. Can’t say bastard? Well, at least they’re helping to publicize a Rupert publication (and Howie is a proud member of the Murdoch Mob) so that’s a good thing...

I'm impressed that he found a Borders that's still in business! Out here in the Bay Area, they seem to be closing them all down. Sort of a 21st century book burning technique...

Part or all of Howie’s last hr may be pre-empted tonight; I think WEEI has Celtics, bumping Sox 7 pm game to RKO—and this means they’d have to carry the VERY exciting pre-game show on RKO, 6 pm or 6:30 or something

Set the Navy SEALs on Whitey Bulger
By Howie Carr | Wednesday, May 4, 2011 |
http://www.bostonherald.com | Columnists

You’ll have to admit that the Pakistani ambassador to the United States did have a point when he was explaining how Osama bin Laden could live so openly in Pakistan for so long.

“If Whitey Bulger can live undetected by American police for so long,” Husain Haqqani told the Atlantic, “why can’t Osama bin Laden live undetected by Pakistani authorities?”

He’s right, isn’t he? The reason Whitey could live “undetected” so long was exactly the same reason that bin Laden could likewise remain “undetected” in Pakistan. He was one of the boys, he was on the team.

Haqqani, it turns out, is a former BU professor, so he knows the Whitey story. My old friend Chris Lydon told me that yesterday, and Lydon pointed out another similarity between the FBI’s two Most Wanted. Both were recruited by U.S. intelligence (FBI, CIA) for use against other enemies (the Italians, the Soviets). Eventually, however, the wars the feds hired them to fight were won.

As Lydon wrote to Haqqani yesterday, “The U.S. authorities in both cases forgot to deal with their agents, who suddenly went rogue and then disappeared entirely.”

Of course, it’s easier to be missing when the cops are looking under every rock except the one you’re hiding under.

What was it that Whitey once said to the cops from the DEA? “You’re the good good guys and we’re the good bad guys.”

So here was Osama, living in a fortress in the literal shadow of Pakistan’s West Point. And yet nobody knew what was going on?

Look, I didn’t force the Pakistani ambassador to set me up to write this column. But yes, I do have a new book out in which Whitey figures prominently, and if you’d like to get a personally autographed copy of “Hitman,” I’ll be signing them tonight at the Paper Store in West Roxbury at 7:30.

Back in 1975, Whitey et al set up a Dorchester bar owner named Eddie Connors. They maneuvered him into a phone booth at the Sunoco station on the corner of Morrissey Boulevard and Freeport Street. A couple of hundred yards away was a function hall, where a few hundred cops inside were getting loaded at some big retirement banquet.

You think the presence of all those cops stopped Whitey and Stevie? They knew nobody was going to hear them, and nobody did. For decades you could stroll into the death booth, its broken glass replaced, pick up the phone and see the nicks in the receiver left by Whitey’s bullet holes.

One rogue agent down, one to go. Maybe instead of the FBI, the feds oughta send the Navy SEAL Team 6 after Whitey.
