Calgary Herald ^

It was a historic night on so many levels. A coveted majority for Stephen Harper's Conservative party, making him only the third Tory leader to ever win three mandates in a row.

The crushing defeat of the Liberals, relegated to third place for the first time in the party's history which is as old as this country; the NDP's orange crush; the Bloc Quebecois' near demise in Quebec, losing their official party status and the election of Canada's first Green party MP, Elizabeth May.

That Liberal Leader Michael Ignatieff couldn't even hold onto his own seat was an enormous humiliation.

A couple of Conservatives say they almost felt sorry for Ignatieff, who led the Liberals to the worst showing ever

“The Conservatives won 166 seats, a comfortable majority of 11 seats, and secured about 40% of the popular vote.

Monday was a historic win for the Tories. Harper is only the third Conservative Leader since Confederation to win three successive governments. John Diefenbaker did it in the late ‘50s and in 1962 and Sir John A. MacDonald won four in the 1880s.

Harper’s majority is the first Conservative one since Brian Mulroney’s in 1988”

Thanks for posting. With the Trump issue and then the Bin Laden story, this very important (and positive) development has been largely missed.

But...but...what about Harper’s birth certificate? Has he released his birth certificate?

Oops, wrong country. :)

And isn’t it funny how the liberal press was hawking that the Conservatives were likely to lose to a resurgent Liberal party. Now America, sit up and take notice.

Iggy lost his seat... he and the Bloc pushed for an unneeded election and they were both wiped out. Couldn’t happen to a more deserving bunch of fellows.

Now the Conservatives can do what they like without having to answer to a deeply divided and impotent opposition.

It will be fun confronting the socialist NDP for the next four years which as every one in Canada knows, is a party green in the tooth and short on experience.

The fly in the ointment is that the party that made the biggest gains is the NDP, a full-throated socialist party that is further left than the liberals. This would appear to point to greater polarization in Canadian political life.

Bloc Quebecois also continued its downward slide, with most of their lost votes going to the NDP.

NDP+Liberal+Bloc Quebecois+Greens = about 56% of the vote. That part is not so good.

The left is deeply divided... that’s why it isn’t able to win a majority. And one isn’t sure Jack Layton will perform any better than Michael Ignatieff, the unlamented Liberal leader who lost his own riding.

Harper doesn’t have much to worry with a 167 seat majority below his belt.

The Conservatives can now pass their agenda without the need to make concessions to opposition parties.

Election promises to put an end to oilsands development, bring in cap and trade taxes on energy, raising corporate taxes, meddling with the bank of Canada's mandate to set interest rates, set the price of gasoline, and reopen the constitution to bring Quebec under its fold, were all destabilizing promises.

That’s great. I was only paying half attention to this, but I heard last week that the libs were surging. Glad to hear it didn’t pan out.

Good news. At least maybe we can still buy oil from them since we can’t get our own.
