Bush declines Obama's invitation to "Ground Zero" Tue May 3, 11:16 pm ET

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Former President George W. Bush has declined an invitation from President Barack Obama to attend a New York ceremony on Thursday to mark the killing of Osama bin Laden, Bush's office said.

"He appreciated the invite, but has chosen in his post-presidency to remain largely out of the spotlight," said Bush spokesman David Sherzer.

Obama is to speak at New York's "Ground Zero" and meet families of some of the victims of the September 11 attacks by Al Qaeda in 2001.

Obama called Bush on Sunday night to inform him of the successful raid on bin Laden's compound, and Bush issued a statement congratulating him and the U.S. military and intelligence agencies for a "momentous achievement."

Why? This is not time for celebration, yes, we can be elated and feel justice has been done but the war is not over. Save the celebrations for when all of the troops are home.

Some think this will help Obama politically. Don’t forget:

George H.W. Bush was riding high in the polls after our victory in Desert Storm. He lost his reelection bid to Bill Clinton. George W. Bush was riding a wave of American Patriotism and popularity after 9-11-2001 and he narrowly beat the lame-brain John Kerry in 2004. This will wane.... IT’S THE ECONOMY STUPID!!!

“Interesting, me thinks Pres Bush is both steamed and has an intuitive grasp that this rally at Zero is a bad thing.”

I agree that the rally, which will be a campaign rally, is a bad thing. Also, recall that Obama invited (Rep Ryan?) to have a special seat up front and then proceeded to roast and humiliate the man. Obama has no class and any invitation should be viewed like a sweating dynamite stick.

1) Bush knows what really happened

2) He will not allow his name or image to be used to support obama

3) Bush will not talk

4) obama has known where binny was and was forced to take him out now... I do not know why or how but there is a “there” there... and someone is leaking bits and pieces... death by a thousand cuts.

At best, Bush does not want to get involved in some classless display. At worst, he did not want to be used as a prop like Trump or Ryan have been.

I don't believe muslims would take to a "christening". ;-)

Why? Narcissists are very resistant to sharing the spotlight.

re: only to be insulted

Excellent point! Once Dubya was there he would be at the mercy of whatever the Obama team wanted to dish out.

In fact, IMHO, there shouldn't even be a Zero at Zero event! Talk about milking something for all it's worth. But it should surprise no one, this is SOP for liberals.

I'll bet Obama is really unhappy that he had to play his hand at this time. He's got to know that ANY poll-bump he gets from this will be long gone by the time the election rolls around.

Several aspects of this whole affair spotlight Zero's inability to make a decision. 16 hours to ‘sleep on it’, no pictures three days later, etc. He simply is not a leader, or a doer. He has once again shown himself to be an empty suit with nothing more than political and socialist aspirations.

Not a wise move. He should go.

I think it's understandable that Bush would not go. This is a campaign stop for barry as much as anything. In addition, barry traditionally treats Republicans horribly during these events, and likely worse off stage. On top of it all, barry has constantly slandered Bush as the "source of all evil" for his adminstration's problems.

I think it's best to let barry sweat it out all alone. Nobody buys that he does anything that isn't completely contrived and political, and none of it is in the best interest of our country.

I should add that I scanned through DUh this morning on this very topic. Base on what I read there, the rabid mouth-frothers believe he's not going because he'd get shot. Lovely crew there...*wretch* Bush is already credited for his efforts by the right, however the left cannot be salvaged on this matter, IMHO.

His refusal to go makes him appear petty, as if he is mad about something. Former Presidents do this kind of thing.

A good GWB lookalike should just show up in NYC on the big day and go around shaking hands with firefighters and other heroes. Hopefully there will be some serious protestations by the Anti-War lefties.

I’d like to retract my “I disagree.” (I’ve been fighting a sinus infection, and apparently it’s affected my ability to read.) Of course Obama didn’t think up this invitation. I’m sure it irks him to have it publicly rejected. Good.
