Interesting you should say that. I can remember as a youngster walking down the sidewalk and hearing that sound coming from houses where they were watching TV. Usually those with me did not hear it, or didn't hear it until I called their attention to it. I always thought it strange that I would hear and others wouldn't. I decided it was because I was more sensitive to high pitch sounds than some others.
I am 70-years-old now and have a real problem with tinnitus. It seems to be a familial thing, my dad had it. We always thought he developed it because as a young man he had worked in the shipyard as a riveter. Talk about a loud noise! But now I have it too and I never was exposed as he was.
I have to wonder if maybe those who are particularly sensitive to high pitched sounds as I was are more prone to developing it later in life.
I had not thought about that sound from TV’s in years! Thanks for the memory jog.
Please add me. I would love to one day know what silence sounds like.
Sounds more like Meniere's disease
Me too. Though sometimes it sounds like grasshoppers, sometime like dry flies (cicadas), and sometimes like frogs singing.
Me too.
Here's a clue: Forget to buy your wife a Mother's Day card or gift. You will find out.............
Only if it's on the bumper of a 64 Chevy coming at you at 60 mph..........
“re: high pitched sound given off by the old TV sets... I have to wonder if maybe those who are particularly sensitive to high pitched sounds as I was are more prone to developing it later in life.”
I think you might be on to something.
I could also hear that sound when I was a child (and others I knew couldn’t). Several on this thread indicate similar experiences.
Please add me to your ping list! Thanks.
Done!...........

Yes, I was diagnosed with meniere’s, not tinnitus. But I did have some tinnitis. Yes, chromium can be toxic - it is a trace metal, after all. You can buy it low dose as Chromium picolinate. Lots of diabetics take it because it seems to help control sugar metabolism.
I found it made a difference in my water retention, and figured that’s how it affected my ears. But I don’t know. I certainly wouldn’t recommend to anyone without them talking to their doctors. I turned out to be prediabetic, and so the chain of events you see, may be part of that.
Some research has suggested in higher doses it may be dangerous, but I took 200 daily for years, and it didn’t seem to cause me any problem.
As far as aspirin - one of the regular side effects of aspirin toxicity is ringing in the ears. Supposedly a low dose won’t do that, but you know, everyone is different. I have found that even on a low dose it sometimes will do it for me. If you take regular aspirin, perhaps some research on the internet and and a discussion with your dr?
“As far as aspirin - one of the regular side effects of aspirin toxicity is ringing in the ears.”
I asked the doc if low dose aspirin could have any effect. He said no. High doses could he said, but it sounded like only on a temporary basis
” I can remember as a youngster”
Some stores/businesses use very high pitch sounds to keep young punks from hanging out in their parking lots! Adults can seldom hear the sound, but it drives younger people away.
chromium is a mineral, necessary for life. you should take it in micrograms though so don’t buy any that claims it’s in milligram form.
100-200mcg should do it. I took it for awhile though and the ringing didn’t go away.
hope it helps for others though.
taking a multi typically means you’re not getting enough of anything as you just can’t cram that much into one pill.
It’s amazing just how many ototoxic medications are out there that get dispensed like candy.
Vitafusion MultiVites (a multi-vitamin) has 120mcg of Chromium.
The other brands of multi-vitamins have similar doses. So, apparently you're getting enough.
Thanks RB. I going to investigate “Esteem”, the procedure Rush has commercials about.
Put me on your (((ping))) list please.
