A political dispute between Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, the Iranian president, and Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, the country's supreme leader is reported to have intensified.
Ahmadinejad is said to be contemplating resigning after Heidar Moslehi, the intelligence minister he had sacked, was reinstated by Khamenei.
The president is understood to have shirked some of his duties and skipped cabinet meetings for the past ten days in anger over the decision.
Mehrdad Khonsari, an analyst with the Centre for Arab and Iranian Studies in London, told Al Jazeera on Friday that the dispute, which began last month, had become "serious".
"It shows the level of disunity at the very top of the Iranian [political] hierachy [with] Ahmadinejad having already polarised the internal political scene as a result of fraudulent election results that were announced more than 20 months ago," Khonsari said.
"He is now beginning to encroach on the powers and privileges vested in the supreme leader, and he and his constituency - mainly among the Revolutionary Guards - have tried to do this.
"And, of course, the supreme leader has tried to make a stand and in this stand he has been joined by many people from the ruling establishment who have been cast aside by Ahmadinejad."
"This is quite a standoff," he said. "Ahmadinejad, I think, at this particular time, has bitten more than he can chew and has been forced to essentially step back, but the fact [remains] that both he and the supreme leader are damaged as a result of this conflict."...
...Al Jazeera's Dorsa Jabari in Tehran quoted an MP as saying that Ahmadinejad had asked the supreme leader to step down as he insists he cannot work with the intelligence minister.

I’ve been following this for the last year.
The Mullahs don’t approve of Mahmoud’s Persian populism. They’re Islamists first, Iranian second. For 1300 years, the Iranian people have resisted the full Islamization of their land. They are proud of their Persian heritage. Ahmadinajad is trying to undermine the Mullahs by playing to those feelings.
All parties involved are nuts, and the poor Iranian people are stuck in the middle.
This is the revolution that we should be supporting, but Obama stays nothing.
The Persians historically are an advanced people. The Islamization of Persia has been to its detriment.
All Muslims are congenital liars. However, the Iranians seem to win the prize as the most supid of liars.
I would love to see both groups go to the mattresses and start to vigorously start hitting each other, mob style.
Bada bing! The Guardian Council sleeps with the hagfishes.
Bada boom! El Supremo Khamenei slips and falls in the tub, knocking his head off.
Bada bam! Don Mahmoud “The Nutjob” Ahmadinejad is gunned down while getting his toenails painted in a barbershop.
Pretty soon the thugs, mugs, and pugs, the lieutenants of the IRGC start going mano-a-mano with army generals. MPs get force fed quarts of castor oil, like they were under Mussolini.
And lots o’ Mullahs start taking flying lessons off the top of high rises.
This has increasingly materialized since Ahmadinejad’s first term as President in 2005. Mullahs such as Khamenei & Rafsanjani, Khatami, and many others continue to fear that. Because they want to retain power under a theocratic Mullahs’ (Clergy) rule, as the primary source of power, not under a (Military) Islamic rule, which has allegiance to Shia 12th Imam as the so-called ‘supreme leader’ (what Ahmadinejad seems to want).
It isn't about 'Persian heritage' per se. Tho, that's a card AN plays just as the Mullahs do when it suits them. However, it is a power struggle between different factions of the Regime itself.
