WASHINGTON - A leading gun-control group gave Oklahoma a score of 2 out of a possible 100 points Wednesday, but the score was enough to keep the state off the "do-nothing'' list.
According to the fourth-annual scorecard released by the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, Oklahoma received its 2 points for not forcing colleges to allow firearms on campus.
Still, the group concluded, "Oklahoma has weak gun laws that help feed the illegal gun market and allow the sale of guns without background checks.''
Gov. Mary Fallin stood by the state's record.
"The U.S. Constitution outlines a right to keep and bear arms, and the people of Oklahoma take that right seriously,'' said Fallin, a Republican.
"I'm proud that our citizens and our lawmakers continue to stand up for the Second Amendment and for gun owners.''
U.S. Rep. Dan Boren, D-Okla., who recently was re-elected to the board of the National Rifle Association and is a member of the Second Amendment Task Force, dismissed the Brady Campaign's scorecard.
"I'd much rather for us to get a 100 percent rating from the NRA,'' he said.
"I think most Oklahomans are of the opinion that they support the Second Amendment," Boren said. "The Brady Campaign holds very little water in Oklahoma.''
Oklahoma's score puts the state, along with four others, just above Alaska, Arizona and Utah, which earned the group's "do-nothing" moniker for not having a single "common sense'' gun law on the books.
California, which earned a score of 80 from the group, was described as a model state.
"After the Tucson shootings, there was a public outcry, once again, over gun violence,'' Brady Campaign President Paul Helmke said, adding that "sensible gun laws'' such as those in California can save lives.
"That's why we're issuing this scorecard, to educate and motivate elected officials and the general public,'' he said. Craziest gun laws honorees The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence gave its awards for the "craziest gun laws'' to:
Kansas, for allowing guns in elementary schools.
Virginia, for allowing guns in bars as long as the patron does not drink.
Utah, for allowing guns on college campuses.
Florida, for considering legislation that would punish doctors for talking to children and parents about guns in the home.
HA HA HA HA HA HA HA!!!!!!
If Ok applies itself, I bet it can lower it’s grade a bit more.... :)
Missouri Scorecard
Missouri has weak gun laws that help feed the illegal gun market and allow the sale of guns without background checks. In the 2009 state scorecards released for all 50 states by the Brady Campaign, Missouri earns just four points out of a total of 100.
Since Missouri does not require Brady criminal background checks on all firearm sales, including those at gun shows, gun traffickers dont need to leave the state to funnel illegal guns to felons and gang members," said Paul Helmke, President of the Brady Campaign.
Here's hoping we'll have that whittled down to 0 before too long....If anyone else wants to see your state's score, here's the link-just click on your state:
WV scored a 4, I’ll take that.
- Employers not forced to allow firearms in parking lots 2pts
- Colleges are not forced to allow firearms on campus 2pts
WV 4 TX 6, take that Texas!
I noticed the phrasing on their score breakdown report. They could have said simply, “Employers/colleges required to allow firearms in parking lots/campus” but no, that would be too neutral, not imflammatory enough.
Hey, we’re working on it. Our goal is (1) to get to a score of zero; and (2) to get a special mention for one of those awards for the “craziest gun laws” (or as the rest of us call them LIBERTY awards.)
Sensible gun laws do save lives, starting with the Second Amendment to the Supreme Law of the Land: A well regulated Militia being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms shall not be infringed.
Naturally the Brady Bunch attaches the “sensible” and “common sense” labels to any state which tramples on the right to keep and bear arms.
Just turn the list upside down. How nice of the Brady bunch to develop a state by state list showing where the government protects everyone's liberty, and freedom is a way of life instead of an afterthought, as well as identifying those states that need more work and less government meddling...
You can really piss off a bunch of bedwetters by using the list in that way. "According to the Brady Campaign, citizens of New Hampshire have more freedoms than citizens of xx other states"...
We in Oklahoma take this as a badge of honor along with our reddest of the red states in the 2008 election. All 77 counties voted against Obama.
2 Mandatory theft reporting of all firearms
3 Report Lost/Stolen Guns - Mandatory reporting by firearm owners
2 Employers not forced to allow firearms in parking lots
2 Colleges are not forced to allow firearms on campus
The best possible score is -2, 0 points and a 2 point "demerit" for having a "no permit" CCW.
So I'm required to report that I lost all my guns on a fishing trip? :-(.
I just put Oklahoma on the list for possible retirement places 3 years from now.
