Is a free hand squat the normal squat like this?

Is so, whats the weight he's doing? I can't imagine any weight of significance could be squatted 1000 times. That's a tall order!!

No. It is a free standing squat with NO extra weight.

From Crossfit.com:
“2.2. How much weight for squats?

If not specified, squats are your body only (aka “air squats”); back squats and front squats use the weight indicated (or adjusted as necessary for completion of the WOD [Workout of the Day]).”

Still, his legs are going to be water after doing 1000 air squats. I have done 400 in a workout and could not walk right for two days after.

Did countless thousands of these on the college rowing team. The most we ever did in one session was about 220, which correlated to the approximate number of strokes you would take in a 2000 meter race. Otherwise I remember being required to do a “final 100” almost every day after racking the shells.
