Sears Holdings Corp. is researching a possible move of its headquarters and 6,200 jobs out of Illinois, a company spokesman said Monday.
The retailer has had preliminary discussions with the Chicago suburb of Hoffman Estates, where it is located, and has commissioned an economic impact study, said spokesman Chris Brathwaite.
"We do owe it to our associates and shareholders to consider options and alternatives and intend to be very thoughtful and thorough in our deliberations," Brathwaite said.
State and local incentives that Sears receives will expire in 2012, Hoffman Estates Mayor Bill McLeod said. The town and company have been talking for about a year, he said, and Hoffman Estates hopes to extend the tax breaks for another 15 years and keep the largest local employer in town.

Sears' decline started long before that merger -- that was more of a symptom than a cause.
The last time we bought an appliance from them, it was a bloody nightmare getting through check-out. Their computer/register systems were so inefficient and antiquated that it was close to an hour from the time we had decided on our purchase to when we were able to leave the store.
Honestly, the only things worth buying at Sears in the last couple of decades were appliances and tools, and lately, I can do better on both at Lowe's and Home Depot.
The Sears in my home town was a wonderland for me as a five-year-old. The ground floor was full of appliances. I still remember the see-thru dishwasher, spraying like the dickens, back-lit with flood lights. The lawn-and-garden department outside. The escalators. The bright lights.
Today, the building's still there, but it's surrounded by low-income neighborhoods. It's basically in the center of the worst part of town. It was built to last a hundred years, it appears. Closed it's doors back in about 1972.
I loved the Sears catalog, too. Had everything in it from fur coats to tractors and gasoline blowtorches. All Made in America, although they didn't have to say that for you to know it was true. Early sixties. *sigh*.

The way that you phrase your observations about Quinn sounds like it’s not his doing. Quinn is leading the charge. What a doofus he is.
I Love Stihl 2-stroke engines, which includes the string trimmer. Mine is probably 5 years old and still runs great.
I also have a chainsaw, and a leaf blower. Both over 5 years old and purr like they are brand new.
Very pricey, but in mind, well worth it.
I had a craftsman blower, and it lasted about one season before it stopped running.
I still love Craftsman hand tools, but their 2-stroke engines are worthless, and I’m finding that some of their power tools are also a lower quality than I expect with the Craftsman name.
After they raised the state income tax by 66%, we moved from Chicago to Sarasota. SCREW THEM!! GO SEARS!!
STOP the Tax BREAKS for SOME businesses....LOWER them for ALL!!!!
Obama’s administration is filing suit on behalf of the union against Boeing and Boeing's plan to build an entire new 787 production line in South Carolina. The reason for building the new plant in SC is as you stated; fiduciary responsibility to the shareholders. A new line would double the production rate and make the line more profitable. To build a new line in Washington State is not economically feasible due to tax rates and unions.
But yet, Obama is attempting to use the power of the federal government to tell a private company where they can operate in the US. This state is okay, but you can't build, operate and employ in this other state. . .why? Because it is a right-to-work state.
Socialism.
My bet would be on Dallas/Fort Worth. Lots of office space downtown, or they could strike a deal out in Las Colinas (Irving) and be 5 miles from the airport.
Either way, you just know they're licking their chops over the lack of a state income tax in Texas.

Sears moved out of Sears Tower in the 1980's and moved to the suburbs to avoid high taxes. Believe me, people in Chicago do not want jobs, they want welfare and high taxes and rich people to go away.

Stihl is great, too. I have a Mantis mini-tiller with a 2-stroke Echo engine on it. Worthless POS. Changed the carb last year, and it still produces a fraction of the power it did when new. It is very temperamental. I finally gave up and bought a Honda minitiller with a 4-stroke engine — MUCH MUCH nicer. Starts all the time, great power curve, and no power drop off with age. Just need to watch the oil as it only holds a couple of ounces! But so far, it hasn’t burned any oil.
I got an older craftsman cordless drill I was given 8 years ago. It has outlasted 2 sets of dewalt batteries and one Milwaukee.
I respectfully Disagree. Quinn cut a deal with the union devil and the machine to win reelection. They rolled him first and everyone else is lining up for theirs. Did you ever hear the Harold Washington clip played about Quinn in the democratic primary? It was devastating.
