Mississippi crests in Memphis at nearly 48 feet crests in Memphis at nearly 48 feet

(AP) - The Mississippi River crested in Memphis at nearly 48 feet on Tuesday, falling inches short of its all-time record but still soaking low-lying areas with enough water to require a massive cleanup.

National Weather Service meteorologist Bill Borghoff says the river reached 47.85 feet at 2 a.m. Tuesday and is expected to stay very close to that level for the next 24 to 36 hours. Reaching its high point means things shouldn't get worse in the area, but it will take weeks for the water to recede and much longer for inundated areas to recover.

"Pretty much the damage has been done," Borghoff said.

The crest is just shy of the record of 48.7 feet at Memphis reached during a devastating 1937 flood.

They are saying this flooding will be worse than what we had last May, and that one was called the Flood of the Century. It was a flash flood, this one is slow, so a lot of people and belongings have been moved out. Some homes and businesses will never be rebuilt in those areas, as the area will be declared a flood plain.

Lot of photos on the right hand side sent in by viewers. They showed a shot of one of the Casinos in Tunica where the water was up to the top of the door. Many of the Casino’s have continued to pay their workers, many of those workers are volunteering to try and save their homes and businesses.

We are high and dry on a big hill, but many of the roads around us are closed due to water over the roads or to high under the bridges. So if you plan to venture down this way be sure to check with the highway depts. of these states.

That 48 feet depth is about 14 feet above flood stage. Yikes.

SNAKES are a BIG issue right now, cotton mouths, rattlers, etc. Their normal food source is flooded out, and they are heading into the city, so no back yard is safe, even if you are in a ‘dry’ area.

I hope no FReepers are in the flood area. If you are, good luck to you!

This one has been a slow rise, the folks in MS got hit first. What is worrying most is the small rivers and lakes that feed into the MS. They will flood first.

Can you imaging that water is at the top of Harrah’s? They moved as much as they could to the sec. floor.

I wonder if the building and home furniture industries will see an uptick after people begin fixing the damage and re-doing their flooded homes in the coming weeks and months.

Thats one thing people dont think about in a flood...snakes

We had a real problem with snakes last year here in

Nashvilles flood last year

Seems like us people in Tn just have to endure one disaster

after another,floods and tornados

Prayers for `yall over there

0 just declared another 5 counties as disaster areas in TN. Makes him look like a good guy, while it is more that the Guv, reps and senators were more reactive this time.

Because this crap usually hits MS before it hits us. And they don’t get the feds response half as well as we get it. Ineffective leadership in their reps and senators. Of course that is how the news seems to show it....most coverage is on Memphis, except where the Casinos are concerned. Tunica was whining about the lost of tax $ from the casinos.

What about all the crop land that won’t get planted this year? That seems to be for gotten about.

Water is headed down to New Orleans and will test the Levee and Spillway Systems like never before to save New Orleans.

in the end, this may require levees below New Orleans to be dynamited.

They did after last May’s flood. Lots of folks went out and bought not just new furniture, but big screens and music systems. Then of course you had to have new fridge, dishwasher, stove, and washer/dryers. New carpet, new floors, dry wall, paint, etc. Lot of them did DIY for the remakes to save money. But those products did get an up tick, and as this is a 3 state disaster......We will begin to know in about 3 weeks. Water is not supposed to recede for at least 2 weeks. The ins adjusters still haven’t made it to some homes that were damaged 2 weeks ago in those bad T storms. Lots of blue roofs, up rooted trees still to be seen.

Some lands will be declared flood plains and not fit for human re-habit. I look for the ins companies to start dropping flood ins or hike it way up.

Allstate canceled all earthquake coverage for Memphis and we sit on the New Madrid fault. Which is why we moved our ins over to Farmers, they did a good bundling house, earthquake and cars and we saved about $800 a yr. As 1 car is antique, and rarely driven ins is less.
