Assad’s Cousin Says an Unstable Syria Bad for Israel

What’s bad for Syrian President Bashar Assad is bad for Israel, and vice versa, the dictator’s cousin told The New York Times Tuesday.

Rami Makhlouf, a wealthy tycoon, warned that instability resulting from the growing and stubborn protest movement against Assad could have severe repercussions for Israel. Many analysts have said that toppling Assad would weaken the Iranian regime and possibly reduce the nuclear threat from Tehran, but the Times interview did not mention the Islamic Republic.

“If there is no stability here, there’s no way there will be stability in Israel,” he told the newspaper in an interview conducted in his offices in Damascus. Makhlouf explained that he did not necessarily mean there would be war with Israel, but “nobody can guarantee what will happen after, G-d forbid, anything happens to this regime.”

He also contradicted himself, saying that a new government led by Muslim radicals could result in a civil war and possibly a conflict beyond its borders.

Of course, that could all never happen in Egypt, Jordan or Turkey. It's only Syria we have to worry about, and Assad is of course the best thing to happen to Israel since they had to throw seltzer bottles out of biplanes for air support. Somebody's getting awful desperate to make this ludicrous argument.

A Syria without the Golan is a whole lot better than a Syria with it, though.

Oh yes! The Golan belongs to Israel, and to nobody else!

I agree with Makhlouf, given the options available. Like most despots, Baathist dictators are fairly rational and ultimately bent on survival. They might need putting in their place from time to time, but each butt-kicking seems to buy decades of relative peace.

On the other hand, Muslim zealots are irrational and unpredictable, never satisfied, and bent toward martyrdom. Since each of their butt-kickings only guarantees a new generation of vengeful enemies, the only remedy is their perpetual extermination.

Given the choices, Israel certainly prefers the late devil's son and former London ophthalmologist, Bashar al-Assad. As they say, better the devil you know...

Sure. That worked great with Egypt and Ghaza. And I just discovered a great new game to play with an empty revolver and a single bullet. Saw it in a movie once.

The devil we know is supplying arms to Hizbollah and allied with Iran and depository for Iraqi and Iranian WMD. The other devil we also know somewhat, and he is either a Sunni zealot and considers Shiites as heretics, or is Kurdish and a possible ally, also being an ethnic and religious (Suffi) minority that the Arab and Iranian majority would love to snuff. There’s a small Kurdish enclave near my home. Not even a roadblock separates us.

Yes, the Golan Heights give them too much of an artillery advantage. Though, I also agree that a Syria without Assad is very dangerous for both Christians in Syria and for Israel.

What he is doing with Iran and Hizbollah and Hamas is a very clear and present danger. What Syria might do without Assad might be worse, if that’s possible, but then again it might also be better. Sallafists, MB or El Qaeda taking over would at least break up the Iran and Hizbollah nexus. Suffist Kurds might actually be friendly.
