Aircraft carrier left us to die, say migrants (Libyans invading Italy and France)

Dozens of African migrants were left to die in the Mediterranean after a number of European military units apparently ignored their cries for help, the Guardian has learned. Two of the nine survivors claim this included a Nato ship.

A boat carrying 72 passengers, including several women, young children and political refugees, ran into trouble in late March after leaving Tripoli for the Italian island of Lampedusa. Despite alarms being raised with the Italian coastguard and the boat making contact with a military helicopter and a warship, no rescue effort was attempted.

If they were given food and water and then towed back to Libya, ok.

If you see or in the area of a distressed ship you must give assistance if at all possible. Return them to port.

The carrier was the Charles DeGaulle. No room for refugees; she has to carry spare rudders and propellers, just in case.

Everyone has to go to the aid of those in peril on the sea.

The US Navy shamefully bypassed Vietnamese boat people
on a couple of occasions (with resulting deaths); and ships from oil companies operating in the area even had orders not to rescue Vietnamese boat people (because since almost no countries would accept them, they feared the refugees would get stuck on the ship and the oil companies end up responsible for them.)

But that is not enough reason to let people die at sea.

NATO criminals are involved in Libya because of the loot worth several trillion dollars, not for saving lives.

They use R2P merely as ruse to plunder.

Your post is a reminder of that horrible time period when millions tried to escape VN. Hate to think how many didn’t make it.

"The Mediterranean cannot become the wild west," said spokeswoman Laura Boldrini.

Contrary to the Hollywood stereotypes, the Wild West was a pretty tame place compared to what the Mediterranean was at the same time period and is about to become again with the radical Jihadists taking power in Egypt, likely Libya, followed by Algeria and Morocco and Turkey now looking East instead of West.

The emerging powers are to the South and East, and the decaying powers are to the North and West.

Before long, it will be back to what Jefferson faced with the Barbary Pirates 200 years ago. Will the Europeans once again pay tribute for the privilege of sailing that sea? What will America do? Can we pay any more than what we already pump into corrupt black holes like Egypt?

One thing for sure. The international "trash-class" rich and famous will no longer feel the least bit secure in their luxury yachts.

We are cursed with living in interesting times.

Not all ships did. When I was on Connie back in 1978, the battle group came across a number of such boats. The refugees were picked up by the destroyer screen then and later transported to Hong Kong.
