City of Dallas keeps $2000 found by honest teen

DALLAS — Dallas will keep $2,000 found by a teenager in a parking lot last February.

The money will go into the city's general fund — not back to Plano high school student Ashley Donaldson, who found the cash in an envelope at the Pavillion Shopping Center in North Dallas.

"I don't regret making the decision I did," she said. "I feel proud of myself for giving the money back. It's one of the biggest decisions of my life."

The 15-year-old Shepton High School student spotted the money on the ground and took it to a nearby Chase Bank.

Over the last three months, the bank and Dallas police have tried to find the owner, but have had no luck.

On Tuesday, police said under a new city policy, the unclaimed money will go into Dallas' general fund — not back to the person who found it, as in years past.

PS If it was found in Plano, why is it going to Dallas?

She lives in Plano but found it in Dallas. Prolly far Dallas el Norte, up by Plano.

Plano would have kept it too. And used it to buy gas for those stupid Yukons all their cops drive. What a waste of
money.

I believe it “may” happen. A good soul receives gifts sometimes unreported.

I never question found money or guns.

If I find food, I was taught that it's best to test it on a politician or a dog, first.

For those that have not seen the video (I didn’t before I posted) this kid and 6 other family members live in a 1 bedroom apartment!

They could USE the money!

She was planing on buying a car if I remember right from the video. Read the comments there, I’m down for 50 bucks if we can find a way to get it to her. I don’t trust paypal, or the paypal account posted in the comments.

Well whose ever money that was has just made an unexpected donation to the State. Talk about a hidden tax.

NO! don’t start a fund. I want to see the droolers at the City of Dallas wither under the criticism and crawl back to
her with the money.

That’s the ONLY lesson that tax wasters remember. Public humiliation. I’m sure WFAA ran the story to whip up a
public sh!t storm.

I live in Illinois. Not sure but I think if no one claims any found money, it goes to the Democrat party.

“2 grand- That could pay for coffee and donuts for us for the next two weeks!” (as the police chief probably said to himself when he heard about this money)

I found some money last year at a mall.
It was a wad of cash, and I thought some kid dropped his birthday or Christmas gift.
I turned it in to lost and found.
“They” looked at me like I was insane for reporting finding it.
Nobody claimed it as lost, so I was given the cash thirty days later.

What really shocked me was the number of people who not only thought I was an idiot for reporting a wad of cash to the mall lost and found office, but those same people who were parents, told me they wouldn’t direct their children to report to the Mall that they had lost money.

The wad of cash I found was just a few dollars shy of two hundred dollars.
If it had been two thousand dollars, I would still have turned it in to lost and found.

If I thought the police would keep the money...I don’t think I would have turned it in.

I feel proud of myself for giving the money back.

Feel all you like but the fact is, no, you didn't give the money back. You gave it away.

Ashley did the right thing but her family needed the money.

Did she? The rightful owner didn't get the $2000 back.

The real owner will never see the money again.

What right does the state have to this money?

I’m not sure how the city has a legal claim to this money, or at least, any greater legal claim than the girl who found it. I bet a decent lawyer could get this money back.

I agree. I hope some attorney steps up to aid her. The family clearly needs the money.

Now.. some time wasting, tax leech with full benes and a fat 401K match, working in the City of Dallas accounting dept, will prolly just dole out the money in the form of paychecks to the rest of the tax leeches supposedly “working” for the city.

Then they will waste the rest of the day on facebook and go home early so they can get a jump on their two week paid
vacation.

And this kid would probably have used the money for college. Now it can go to paying the pension of a city worker so they can retire at 55.

They have a poll with the article. So far 99% believe Ashley, the teen who found it should keep it.
