Anybody who's ever had a lacrosse stick knows that those are essential tools for string repair.

Correct. And the key word here is tools, not weapons.

We had a similar incident involving an innocent white kid at our local high school a few years back. His resulting lawsuit ended up paying for 100% of his college expenses and he recently graduated debt free. Unfortunately, the idiot administrator who thought it was a good idea to make an example of him still has a job and we the taxpayers are paying higher insurance premiums for her idiocy.

"I’ll just jump to a conclusion that these are probably white boys...."

I'd guess that you're probably right. Someone in the school administration probably has it in for the kids who are engaged in this sport. The likelihood of unraveling and discovering the genesis of this incident is slim to none. And, I'd also guess that these are white kids. The chances of a search of the basketball bus is pretty remote and, should that ever occur, the people doing the searching will be carefully selected.

On the other side of the Potomac where I attended high school in the 60’s the Hunting Club kept their rifles in our lockers during the day so we could talk about them at the meetings after class. I find it hard to believe how much of our freedom we have lost.

The Maryland state school board is already taking a look at whether zero-tolerance policies go too far.

The results are back, and the MD state school board has determined that their "zero tolerance" standards weren't strict enough, and that the lacrosse sticks are potentially deadly weapons, and the last time the lacrosse team boarded the bus, the entire team was handcuffed, arrested, and processed by the police.

It's been a long time since I've played LAX (1988), but things sure have changed in the equipment... The first thing that I noticed is the all the players are now using nylon mesh for the nets on the crosse (which explains the lighter, to ensure the cut ends don't fray), and a pen knife or Leatherman tool is needed for making adjustments to the net and crosse. Back in my day, we used leather and nylon laces.

The parents get a school handbook. Either they didn’t read it or they couldn’t believe what they were reading.

My guess is they couldn’t believe what they were reading. “Nah, it couldn’t happen to our kid. Our school officials have much more sense and too much decency to subject our kid to criminal charges, yada, yada, yada.”

Not to mention paying the admin's pension for the rest of her life!

Anyone who approved this assault needs to be fired before the end of the day.

We have plenty of people with brains in their heads to replace them.

In fact - anyone this stupid - would improve the result by not even being replaced.

As a side note - I wonder how many Lax bags in this country have similar “dangerous materials” in them. I have to go take the screwdrivers out of my son’s bag now.

Silly parents would assume officials would have more sense - they took the kid away in handcuffs -- my guess is that's not in the handbook.

My husband is a youth coach. You should see his repair kit--I'd better start raising bail money.

The really sad thing is that so many people see Lacrosse as a "white sport." It's not. Actually, it's an American Indian (I'm a "Native American," but I have no ancestors who were of American Indian descent) sport. And many great players have been Black. The best example being Jim Brown of NFL fame. He was an All American in both football AND lacrosse while in college. And currently, 2 of the best players in the NCAA are black, the Bratton brothers, though one has been suspended for the rest of the season, and the other has been thrown off the VA team for good.

It's a terrific sport, and as it spreads around the country, more and more people, including Blacks, are playing.

School officials and Educators are proof positive that there are people that can be educated far beyond their intelligence.

This isn’t Baltimore; this is the Easton on Eastern shore of Maryland, a rural, but fairly wealthy, and very conservative area.
