You are wrong about that. They ARE gas operated. How else does that roller block ejector system work? The gas is vented around the casing, released it first, then drives the rolling block rearward. It is a very short stroke and the gas only moves a fraction of an inch instead of a long tube at the muzzle like the M-16.

The HKs are in fact not gas operated. They are recoil operated.

The flutes cut in the chamber are there to keep the case walls from sticking to the chamber.

no they’re not, HK91/93/MP5 etc are recoil operated. the roller acts as a delayed blow back system. the HK416 is a piston driven version of the M4 upper. the M4 upper uses direct gas impingement onto the bolt carrier

The G3/HK91 is roller-locked delayed-blowback recoil operated.

the chamber flutes only help in extraction by mitigating some of the obturation of the case aginst the chamber wall. all of the recoil energy has been transmitted to the bolt before any gas reaches the chamber flutes.

Anyway, in the G3/HK91, the chamber flutes do not extend all the way to the mouth of the chamber, so there is no pathway for the gas to reach the bolthead unntil the case is extracted from the chamber.
