I think that the competitive idea that you can't let people pass is remarkably common among immature drivers.
Back in 1964 I bought my first new car, a Volkswagen. Top out 72 mph. I drove from Raleigh to Kingsport on US 70/421 repeatedly.
I learned early on that unlike my old chevy, people resisted being passed by a Volkswagen and frequently speeded up to prevent that happening.
Movies like “Fast and the Furious” and all their genre seem to have that effect on young minds.
I remember when “Vanishing Point” came out in the early 70’s muscle car era. After the movie, rubber was being burned all over the parking lots of movie theaters all across America..............
