I was in Red River Gorge two weeks ago and my friend and I came upon a bear's territorial marker tree that it had absolutely shredded. This was a nice, sturdy Canadian Hemlock that it had just torn apart.

We snapped a couple of photos, I unhooked the snap on my holster, and we quickly made our way back to the truck, taking care to keep a close eye out for Yogi.

Only a fool goes out looking for trouble with a bear. Even black bears, like the ones we have here in Kentucky, are nothing that anyone in their right mind wants to mess with.

Last June, one of my sister's coworkers was hiking in Red River Gorge with her husband and son. The husband got about one hundred yards ahead of them and encountered a male black bear out looking for a mate. The bear charged, clawed him on the arm, and then clamped its jaws around his thigh. Fortunately there were other hikers nearby who managed to knock the bear off him and chase it away.

This is the photo he took with his cell phone just seconds before Yogi charged.
