Air Force One executed a missed approach on its first attempt to land today at Bradley Field in Connecticut, circling the airport before making a successful landing on the second try.
The FAA said visibility was below the minimum, meaning the pilots couldnt see the runway from the altitude required for landing due to thick cloud cover. They were coming in to Runway 6 on instrument approach.
Weather at the field at the time was overcast with visibility of 1.5 miles and cloud ceiling 300 feet to 1000 feet variable.
Sources said the attempt was not a touch-and-go or dramatic maneuver that would have caught attention from those on the ground.
A missed approach is called by the pilot in command of an aircraft or the aircraft crew at any point in the approach to an airport on aninstrument approach, an aviation expert told ABC News.
It simply means that the pilot was uncomfortable completing the approach due to visibility, cloud ceiling, or any number of reasons. ..

Idaho has eagles in the mountains.
solo passenger so I had choice of seat, two young guys flying a twin fokker..

Well, the way I heard the ‘story’ is — ALL those fokkers were Messerschmitts.
I must say that ANY headline that has “Air Force One” “executes” and “Obama” -or any prez- in the same sentence deserves a ‘look see’.... <: <:
My point is they were trusting the equipment and the equipment might have led him to the mountain side. I could see why someone would hesitate to trust it in zero visability.
Yes, absolutely. Good call.

I guess it’s true that “Ya can’t win em all.”
Was it the official excuse when President Bush came to CT in 2003 and 2007 for the US Coast Guard Academy’s graduation?
I don’t like him, but gimme a break.

IF Bush did the rounds of fundraising for his re-election campaign then, I’ll say the same boo to him too.
I understand that Obama, after recognizing the approach was bad, rushed to the cockpit, removed the pilot and single handedly pulled the plane up averting the loss of both plane and crew.
After instructing the pilot on proper approach techniques, Obama then returned control of the plane back to the captain.

Bradley International is pretty much alongside the Connecticut River. In the kind of weather that New England is having this week, there is a lot of fog so almost all landing are instrument landings. Even on most instrument landings the pilot expects to sight the runway at a certain altitude. The pilot did not on the first approach so the approach was aborted.
Remember that there are old pilots and there are bold pilots but there are damn few old bold pilots. Rather run the risk of doing an unintended Sullenberger maneuver on the Connecticut River, the pilot decided to give it a second try.
As usual, the press corps was unaware that had the pilot continued on the first approached, they may have become the press corpses.
I, for one, will miss “Missed Approach”. He was a good boy. He had a tough childhood. Did the Air Force have to execute him? Is there no mercy left in this world?
What fundraising is The Won doing? I’d be interested if you have a link.
He touched-down at 10AM, commencement was scheduled to start at 11. It’s close to hour from Bradley to New London.
Just makin' sure his CT SS number is still valid.
