Sports was the only thing NBC had credibility at anymore. I guess they want to correct that so that they have zero credibility across the board.

Ebersol has been a broadcasting icon for years .. a true
pioneering professional.

NBC Universal = GE = merged with Comcast = state-run media = obama

“The complicated deal, which values NBCUniversal at $30 billion, was first announced in December 2009.

Comcast will pay GE $6.5 billion in cash and also contribute some of its programming assets to the joint venture.

The merger combines Comcast’s cable networks, such as E!, Versus and the Golf Channel with NBCUniversal’s struggling NBC broadcast network, as well as popular cable networks

USA, Bravo, MSNBC and The Weather Channel. NBCUniversal also owns the Universal Studios film and theme park businesses.

The Federal Communications Commission and the Department of Justice approved the deal earlier this month.”

NBC Sports and NBC in general are line for cuts since the Comcast takeover. Look for Comcast subscribers to pay more in fees too.

Isn’t Comcast known for being cheap?

I have heard Clear Channel is sometimes called Cheap Channel.

I am pretty sure that the Comcast regional networks are still going to be renamed NBC Sports (regional network name).

From what I’ve been reading, Versus will be absorbed into NBC Sports.

I’ve predicted that Comcast will drown ESPN and Murdoch in sports programing. Ebersol has been dumbing down sports telecasts for years: Red Sox vs. Yankees, Red Wings vs ?, Sidney vs. Ovie, Kobe ad nauseam. The Derby was unwatchable with all the celebrities(?), fashions, Mrs. Ritvo and Rosie. The horses I bet, Animal Kingdom and Master of Hounds, never got a second of air time.
Ovie & Sidney? NBC-VS rode Sidney until he broke down. Ovie shipped out early. The team that was best all season was Vancouver which was never shown all year. So instead of showing the great teamwork and top stars, NBS-VS shows the borderline obscene Green Men, a ripoff of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, instead throwing out of the arena. Good riddance.

From everything I heard, he was a gentleman. He lost a son a few years ago I believe. Regardless, he was an innovator.

"He lost a son a few years ago I believe."

He is married to actress Susan St. James (McMillan and Wife). You're right about the son. They lost their son Teddy four years ago in a private plane crash.

I’m sorry for any personal tragedies that have affected their family.

That said, Ebersol has a lot to answer for.

He is infamous for promoting NBC’s ‘plausibly live’ coverage of Olympics that were - gasp - staged in foreign countries that didn’t observe nice neat little prime time broadcasting windows. In the internet age such a policy was a lost cause but Ebersol stuck with it - probably because he viewed his audience as indolent dolts who would wait for the result after incessant commercials.

Supporting one’s fellow citizens as they compete in the Olympics is one thing but Ebersol/NBC took mindless jingoism and flag-waving to embarrassing extremes. Had Ebersol been in charge in the 70s at ABC we may never had have known Olga Korbut or Franz Klammer but we certainly would have been buried by coverage of some US also-ran - especially if he/she had a Devastating Personal Tragedy (DPT) to overcome.

He was the epitome of Manhattan/Broadcast Row’s contempt for its middle America audience.

{Ebersol's boss] Burke has stressed that the division, which has hundreds of millions of dollars of losses a year, should do sports-rights deals only if they're likely to make money.

Completely unreasonable MSM request ping.

Following the logic that sports deals should only be made if they make money, shouldn’t the news division be cut since they lose money?

For sports, you need to spend the money. There is a lot of competition that is willing to do it. Didn’t Fox spend an outrageous amount of money to snatch the NFC NFL division rights from CBS a long time ago because CBS wasn’t willing to spend that much?
