Gov. Jerry Brown proclaims Sunday second annual Harvey Milk Day
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | May 20 2011 | Marisa Lagos

Gov. Jerry Brown declared Sunday as the state's second ever "Harvey Milk Day," saying the slain politician's "life was cut short far too soon, but his legacy of hope, tolerance, and equality lives on."

Sunday would have been Milk's 81st birthday. The San Francisco supervisor and gay rights leader was shot and killed, as was Mayor George Moscone, by another supervisor in 1978.

"In 1977, Harvey Milk was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, becoming the first openly gay man in the history of the United States to be elected to public office," Brown's proclamation reads in part. "This milestone achievement gave hope to millions of gays and lesbians across the country that a day would come when they could live their lives openly and honestly without fear of discrimination."

In 2008, former Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger vetoed a measure that would have made May 22 a "day of special significance" in public schools. But a year later, when a similar measure -- also by San Francisco State Sen. Mark Leno -- landed on his desk, the governor signed it. A spokesman said at the time that Schwarzenegger's mind was changed by President Obama's awarding Milk the Presidential Medal of Freedom and an Academy Award-winning film about Milk's life.

Some leftist crazy shot him because he thought the Gov't screwed him out of a a decent wage. If Milk was somewhere else, this piece of garbage shooter would have killed another person just the same. No reason to honor this Commie Milk than there is to celebrate a victim of hit and run.

Dan White, the guy who shot and killed Harvey Milk, wasn't some leftist (though he was a democrat), and he wasn't angered about a decent wage, Harvey Milk basically screwed (metaphorically speaking) him, and his district, and ruined the guys life.

Its not hard to see what Milk did to the guy, that the jury was sympathetic to Dan White. Dan White wasn't some lowlife with a petty grudge, he has a pretty good reason to be angry, Milk was out to destroy the guys district (Dan White was also a politician) and he did ruin the mans life.

Gov. Jerry Brown proclaims Sunday second annual Harvey Milk Day

Wouldn't that make it the Bi-annual Harvey Milk Day?

That is subjective. I will stick with my understanding of the situation. White was a leftist and went around doing things very poorly to correct it.

I often wonder how much of my taxes makes its way to Kalifornia. It makes me sick. I long to live in a state where we tell the Feds what they’ll get after our nationl defense has been paid for (eliminate the IRS at an individual level). That would be one hell of a platform for a governor in a red state.

Are you familiar at all with who Dan White was?

If you think so, I don't see how being a leftist would have made him more or less angry that Milk stuck a home for drug addicts and homeless people, rapists and violent criminals in his district in an attempt to force out the families living there ......Seriously, look up the actual "home" that Milk pushed to have placed in Dan Whites district, it was basically hell on earth, all part of attempt to drive out the blue collar families there, so that it could be a haven for the kinds of people Harvey Milk wanted.

The breaking point, was when he resigned (stupidly), then went to get his job back, only for Harvey Milk to intervene, and prevent White from getting it.

FWIW, The police department there, wore t-shirts saying "free Dan White" as soon as he was arrested. Then again, Dan White was a cop originally.

Dan White just didn't want his neighborhood turned into a cesspool, Harvey Milk did want that neighborhood turned into a cesspool (at least temporarily), Milk also wanted someone there that he could control, and fought like holy hell to keep Dan White from even working, in any capacity, ever again......There is a reason so many families cheered when Dan White got a short sentence instead of a full term.

If the Left could have their way, they would have a national holiday for the queers like the 4th of July. Instead of fireworks, they would be popping condoms and sodomizing each other on floats.

Milk didn’t live long enough to run around naked in a Pride Day Parade.

LOL! Oh the humanity!!!
Maybe for the next *Pride Day Parade* they could get a big naked balloon of him (like the Macy's Parade) and walk it through the streets :^)

Daniel James (DJ) White was a decorated Vietnam War Veteran who served in the San Francisco Police & Fire Department. How many of you know that the late DJ White once saved the life of a woman & her baby from a burning building when he was a fireman.

The Mayor Moscone used to be a public defender. Yes, people accused of a crime deserve the best defense innocent or guilty, but Mayor Moscone defended child molesters he knew were guilty. Harvey Bernard Milk in 1964 committed statutory rape on a teenage boy (the boy committed suicide i 1980) but H.B. Milk was never prosecuted for it. Harvey Bernard Milk treated people who differed with him arrogantly incl. Mr. DJ (Dan) White. As far as I’m concerned, Harvey Bernard Milk should’ve been convicted & jailed for felony statutory rape in 1964 & lost his right to vote.

No, Daniel James (DJ) White had no right to kill, but what DJ White did was not a death penalty murder & maybe, he should’ve done more prison time for 2nd Degree Murder but it wasn’t 1st Degree. Dan James White isn’t so bad as people make him out to be & his victim Harvey Bernard Milk isn’t some1 who I mourn. If homosexual groups want to honor Harvey Bernard MIlk, then that’s 1 thing but forcing public schools to honor him is bad esp. when the fact about Harvey Bernard Milk being a statutory rapist gets minor coverage.
