We need a Free Press. We really don't have one. Not sure how to go about it. Tell everyone to tell as many as they can I guess. Challenge people's assumptions. It's a start.

I generally take a non-political tack that simply puts the press' competence into question. If you're talking to someone who works in a particular field, ask them what they think of the reporting/opinion pieces regarding their own field -- on the whole, you'll get a lot of complaints about how the articles are wrong, agenda-driven, showing a lack of understanding, etc.

Then I ask them if the reporting on X is so bad, how can they trust the reporters on politics, economics, and the like? Surely all the bad reporting isn't isolated to say, medicine or technology, is it?
