We have such an abundance in this country, we have no idea what real privation is.

Wasn’t it Ben Franklin who warned us not to coddle the poor, but to make them struggle and to hate being poor as a way to improve themselves?

Some gems from this column...
The country as a whole is not any richer because the government pays our medical bills with money that it takes from us.
How true is this? How can the nation be richer because of money spent by the government that is either taken from us by coercion or borrowed from future generations? How?
Professor Walter Williams of George Mason University long ago showed that you could give the poor enough money to lift them all above the official poverty line for a fraction of what it costs to support a massive welfare state bureaucracy.
This suggests, of course, that the purpose of poverty programs is not to alleviate suffering, but to control the public. Freepers know this, but the public, unfortunately, does not.
The goal is not to keep the poor from starving but to create dependency, because dependency translates into votes for politicians who play Santa Claus.
Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding. We have a winner!
"Entitlement" is just a fancy word for dependency.
Ding. Ding. Ding. Ding....

"Freedom in not empowerment. Empowerment is what the Serbs have in Bosnia. Anybody can grab a gun and be empowered. It's not entitlement. An entitlement is what people on welfare get, and how free are they? It's not an endlessly expanding list of rights - the "right" to health care, the "right" to food and housing. That's not freedom, that's dependency. Those aren't rights, those are the rations of slavery - hay and a barn for human cattle."
