In an attempt to go green, the U.S. government will be purchasing 116 new plug-in electric vehicles for use in the federal fleet but according to The Detroit News, the majority of that order consists of 2012 Chevrolet Volts.
By the start of 2012, the General Services Administration, which oversees the purchase of two-thirds of the federal fleet, will take delivery of 101 new Volts, 10 Nissan Leafs, and five Think City EV plug-in electric vehicles. While the purchase will help to reduce the agencys carbon footprint, it will not increase the size of the federal fleet, as the GSA buys approximately 65,000 new vehicles every year.
The electric vehicles will be given to 20 different agencies in Detroit, San Francisco, San Diego, Los Angeles, and Washington, D.C., where the government will also install charging stations for federal use. The report is not clear on whether or not the charging stations will also be open to the public.

Fixed it...
I hope a lot of government garages burn down!
Somebody has to buy that crap. Might as well be the government. They can use somebody else’s money to pay for this crap.
And the electricity for these vehicles? Provided by fossil fuels, of course.
Waiting,
waiting,
still waiting...
Have these vehicles been given road hump clearance tests?
Well, ain’t that special. Proof that Obama is an idiot.
Your tax money being flushed for political agenda # 5,678...
FUBO!
No one else is buying Volts why not the idiots in the federal government?
65,000 new vehicles every year.
Out of control.
Somebody’s gotta buy ‘em, I guess.
I saw one on the road for the first time the other day. Not too many of them around here in the burbs north of Dallas.
OHB: "I can't believe it's so quiet. Almost as if it's not running at all."
GM flack: "It's not sir, we're still on the conveyor."
“And the electricity for these vehicles? Provided by fossil fuels, of course.”
Coal produces 2.1 lbs of co2 for kwh. The Volt uses 10.4 kwh...GM advertises ‘up to 40 miles’ per charge...but Consumer Reports got around 25. So, around 2.4 miles per kwh, or 0.88 lbs co2 per mile.
A gallon of gasoline makes around 20 lbs of co2. So, if your car gets better than 23 mpg, you are more ‘green’ than a Volt owner....assuming you believe in global warming.
So, the premise of the story that the government is being more ‘green’ is false in more than one way. Really, the headline should read:
“Government uses junk science to justify paying double for lemon cars, in order to prop up union supporters. American middle class stuck with the bill”.
btw, try to explain this to a liberal, and they’ll just tell you we need to stop burning coal...they have mounted the goal post on wheels for ease of movement.
Somebody has to buy that crap. Might as well be the government
It is our money they are buying the cr@p with. Maybe they will use them in the military police to chase AWOLs - of course that would depend on how far the AWOLs went before the gov. electric car DIED!
And the electricity for these vehicles?
They’re also using our tax money to build charging stations for them.
Only way these $41 Grand, which in 3 yrs will be worth $17G can be sold. I’d not have one if you gave it to me. It WOULD burn down my 45 year old home. We are at max electric capacity now. We’d have to rewire the whole house.
