Awkward Moment During Obama Toast to Queen

The president and the orchestra at Buckingham Palace this evening were a bit out of synch.
When the president toasted the Queen the orchestra misunderstood a pause and what seemed to be a cue from the president for “God Save the Queen” to begin playing.
“Ladies and gentlemen please stand with me and raise your glasses as I propose a toast,” the president said, putting down his note cards and grabbing his glass. “To her majesty the Queen.”
The president paused, the guests stood, and the orchestra prepared to play.
But the president wasn’t done speaking.
“The vitality –“ the president said before the orchestra began.
Then the familiar tune – you might know it better as “My Country ‘Tis of Thee” – started up.
The president kept going: “ -- of the special relationship between our peoples and for the words of Shakespeare to this blessed plot, this earth, this realm, this England,” the president said as the awkward moment played out.
The Queen looked ahead as the UK anthem played.
“To the Queen,” the president finally said.
He lifted his glass to her, she smiled a bit uncomfortably.
But because the song was playing, no one drank from his or her glass, including the president, who put his glass down on the table.

I had to check it out when I saw your post, and I ended up watching it twice! Hahahahaha! She told him to "Set it down". I absolutely HOWLED! What a DOOF!

I just saw a video clip of Obama in the Oval Office.. and, in the clip saw a bronze bust that looks JUST LIKE this one... except, it was of some black man I didn’t recognize.
It seems to me that the State Department, which is responsible for briefing the President on protocol issues, enjoys seeing this man play the horsesarse.
I just watched it. That was CRINGEWORTHY!!! During the NATIONAL ANTHEM (or royal anthem) you DO NOT SPEAK. You don't even do that HERE in this, the country he pretends to be a citizen of!!!!
And worst, or most hilarious, is at the end of the little haughty Shakespeare toast, when Obama STILL ATTEMPTS TO RAISE HIS GLASS TO THE QUEEN!!!!!! She looks at him as if he had 3 green heads. Then he realizes NO ONE ELSE is holding their glass or even paying any attention to him. You see the look on his face as if he suddenly found himself in his underwear. I have not seen ANYTHING more embarrassing. In fact, this should be the video entry to the dictionary on line for "EMBARRASSMENT."

Broken “O” in Michelle Obama’s signature, “O” struck through and trampled all over on Barack Obama’s signature.
You might get the impression that neither are all that comfortable signing that particular surname.
Oh well, at least Michelle’s is honest, pinched angry scrawl that it is. Our president’s looks like something a self-absorbed teenager might cook up to look like a “real” signature, too cute by half with that OB combination. No way anybody ever came up with that during the course of actually writing a name.

OMGosh, this is so embarrassing that I actually feel a little sorry for him screwing up this big!
But if he had ANY respect for our own anthem he would know that you do NOT talk through it, even if someone wrote for you a very flowery toast. He is just plain STUPID.
If they meant well by it, sure. And if it didn't become a habit.
I also said "It was awkward." Obama was damned if he did. Damned if he didn't. If he didn't finish it, we'd be harumphing how Obama couldn't finish a simple toast before the band played over him. As it was, he tried to say something complimentary. I think he's a goof, but I'll give him credit for finishing his toast.

Be assured that there was a State Department protocol officer nearby who instructed the First Couple that, when you say, "To the Queen" that cues the band to play the anthem. Any pleasantries you intend to communicate come before "To the Queen".
Our President either a.) wasn't listening or b.) couldn't organize his thoughts without a Teleprompter.
Consider that the crass and clueless cowboy, George W. Bush, never did -- and never would've -- made a mistake like this.

Yes, The QUEEN has to tell him to set it down. Watch her and listen when he finishes his toast and lifts his glass. You can see her say, “Set it down” and he sheepishly sets his glass down. Bahahahaha!
It is comedy gold. If this were Bush, SNL would already have the script for the skit.
He probably can’t do that without a teleprompter.
OFGoshS- ROFLOL. That simpleton had NO IDEA about protocol. If any leftist is unable to FINALLY admit that their #1 guy acted like an idiot in this situation, then scr3w them. I am a conservative and at least had the guts to admit when GWB blew it. (NCLB, drug benefits for seniors, etc.)
