LONDON – It was all going so well.
But when the time came for President Obama to deliver his toast to Queen Elizabeth Tuesday night, the meticulously planned state dinner at Buckingham Palace turned, well, awkward.
As Obama began wrapping up his remarks, he put down his notecards and picked up his glass.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please stand with me and raise your glasses as I propose a toast,” the president said, as the guests stood up. “To her majesty the Queen.”
At this point, the band queued up “God Save the Queen.” But Obama wasn’t quite finished yet.
So he kept talking – over the British national anthem – and the president competed with orchestra for a few more seconds.
“For the vitality,“ Obama said just before the music started, “of the special relationship between our peoples, and in the words of Shakespeare, ‘To this blessed plot, this Earth, this realm, this England.’”
Obama raised his glass, but nobody else in view of the camera followed. And the queen, who had been looking straight ahead, glanced over to offer a pained smile.

We have our own form of ceremonies here as well. Would it be ok for the Queen or any other head of state to come here and ignore our protocol?

Diane Sawyer attributed his signing the wrong date to a case of jet lag. They give him a pass on everything. Why is he overseas AGAIN? Hasn’t he had TWO state dinners with the Queen? They must be getting sick of seeing him. Is this doofus trying to rack up frequent flyer miles before he leaves office or what?

Clue me in. Did obama insult the Queen by not sipping from his glass after lifting a toast to the Queen? I’m do not drink at all, so I don’t know about these things. It looked like an insult to me as I watched the Queen sip from her glass and he set his glass down on the table without lifting it to his lips.

Yes, they are an anachronism. But they are Britain. And, given our special relationship, warranted on so many levels, we should respect them.
I would imagine that, were the Queen in the USA, we would expect as much of her.
The Obama Administration is light on protocol and heavy on Chicago thugishness.

Some speech writer was determined to leave the impression that Obama had a college education and Obama wasn’t going to miss the chance to deliver the quotation, come hell or high water or the British national anthem. Obama was never ready for prime time.

No they weren't. The toast to the Head of State is pretty much de rigueur. In this case it's FIVE words "ladies and gentlemen, the Queen", and the orchestra plays. How hard is that to stuff up?
