JERUSALEM Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of Israel returned from Washington on Wednesday to a nearly unanimous assessment among Israelis that despite his forceful defense of Israels security interests, hopes were dashed that his visit might advance Palestinian peace negotiations.
One of the widely articulated goals of his trip, where he met with President Obama and addressed Congress, was to find a way to lure the Palestinians back to direct negotiations, thereby preempting their plan to approach the United Nations in September for recognition of statehood within the pre-1967 lines.
Instead, the Palestinians now say, Mr. Netanyahus speeches convinced them that they have no negotiating partner. They plan to intensify their United Nations efforts, leaving Israelis worried about increasing international isolation and pressure, especially in light of the popular uprisings across the Arab world.
A cartoon in the centrist Yediot Aharonot newspaper summarized the concern. It showed Mr. Netanyahus returning plane flying near a volcano. Inside the plane someone says, All in all, it was a very successful visit. From the volcano, smoke rises that spells out S-E-P-T-E-M-B-E-R.
Newspapers and airwaves were filled with similar commentary.
Avi Dichter, a former head of the Shin Bet internal security service and a parliamentarian from the centrist Kadima party, said on Israel Radio, My fear is that this round of speeches in the United States may leave us and the Palestinians with a closed door.
A poll commissioned by Maariv newspaper found Mr. Netanyahus popularity up slightly after his Washington visit. Asked who was best suited to be prime minister of Israel, he took 36.9 percent. Second place went to Tzipi Livni, head of the centrist Kadima party, with 28.3 percent, followed by Foreign Minister Avigdor Lieberman, head of the ultra-nationalist Yisrael Beiteinu party, with 9.2 percent.

This Israeli thought Bibi did great.
If the Israelis don’t want Bibi, we’ll adopt him! I would say the NYT is “blowin’ smoke” on this one! As a result of his trip, Bibi and Israel know that even if the American President and his Administration doesn’t support them, the majority of the American Congress and people do!
Also, looking at the polls, combine the 37% Bibi has with the 10% Lieberman (who is more of the “kill the arabs” bend) and you get 47%.
That’s hugh and series plurality in a parlimentary systems.
‘Israelis See Netanyahu Trip as Diplomatic Failure (NYT spin)”
Israel is probably blessed with a liberal MSM just as us.
Bibi showed true patriotic leadership and it’s too bad he’s not eligible to be President.
Neither is Obama but apparently doesn't matter anymore.
Any bets as to the NYT reporting that Reagan’s “Tear Down This Wall” speech to also be a failure? How about when Reagan walked away from Reykjavik and Gorbachev?
Obama fails again.
Nonsense, the only thing that could make the session better was if Bibi had Sulsberger in front of him and strangled him. That would have gotten another standing ovation.
They expected Bibi to bring the Arabs back to the table? Why should they, when Obama backed their case?
lay off Obama! He is going to lay a wreath on Lenin’s tomb this memorial day!
How about we let Bibi be our leader and Bobo can go run Israel?
EVERYTHING the NYT publishes is so steeped in politics it’s hardly worth notice. I’ve never seen their weather reports but can’t imagine anything from these mad dogs that’s straight up.
BRUSSELS - Israel is sitting on at least $150 billion in future revenues following the discovery of vast offshore gas deposits, Finance Minister
Then thank God it wasn’t a success.
Yeah, the greatest speech in the Congress in decades with 29 standing ovations was an epic failure. How do you get a job as a distorter? Hands down the most overpaid jobs in America.
Pray for America
This Bronner dude is a serious propagandist.
Any reference I may make to The New York Yimes will be preceeded by the aclamation “From The Stalinist Broadsheet” and I would ecourage others to do so,
Its one thing to be liberal like the Huff post which will criticize Obama from time to time. But the NYT is also extremely partisan. All of sudden bombs dropped in the Mideast are “sanctified” since Obama has taken office.
