Still Hiding The Decline?

Global Warming: Alarmist academics are being forced to show their work and they don't like it. Do they fear that a web of deception will unravel if their data are made public?

A state judge has ordered the University of Virginia to cough up documents that pertain to the climate change research of Michael Mann, a former professor known for the hockey stick chart that supposedly shows the earth warming sharply over the last 100 years.

Mann's response has been to accuse "fossil fuel industry-funded climate change deniers" with harassing the university, NASA "and scientific institutions with these frivolous attacks."

Across the Atlantic, Paul Nurse, head of a scientific group, is moaning about how unfair it is for British scientists to put up with freedom-of-information laws.

Requests for drafts and notes, he says, are intimidating and "will consume a huge amount of time" to comply with.

"It is essential that scientists are as open and transparent as possible and, where they are not, they should be held to account," Nurse, president of the prestigious Royal Society, told the British press.

"But at times this appears to be being used as a tool to stop scientists doing their work. That's going to turn us into glue. We are just not going to be able to operate efficiently."

Nurse must have a first-rate mind, at least according to author F. Scott Fitzgerald's definition. Because he seems to be functioning normally while holding two contradictory ideas in his head at the same time: Though he agrees with transparency — or at least says he does — he nonetheless condemns it as a hurdle to academic inquiry.

When scientists start sounding like lawyers, you can bet that they aren’t very good scientists.

“Requests for drafts and notes, he says, are intimidating and “will consume a huge amount of time” to comply with.”

But the left has no problem with having the IRS harass their political opponents.

These guys don't get it.It's not a request,it's a Court Order. And it can be damn inconvenient to ignore.

they do get it.
...it simply shows just how guilty they are.
again, “hide the decline” emails were talking about concealing that not only is it not getting warmer, but it’s actually been getting COLDER since 2003.
AGW is the biggest, most costly hoax, in all of human history.
...they would rather go to jail over failure to comply with a FOIA and court order, than have this revealed.
tiny sample of how they fraudulently alter official records:

When I was in college on my tests I had to show my work or I wouldn’t get credit for it.

They should have their funding totally cut off until they comply, and they should be prevented from publishing anything that was paid for with federal funds until they comply.

Who do these jerks think they are? Science is supposed to be a search for the truth, not a game to see how you can manipulate data and make up a nice story to publish and advance your career.

‘Mann’s so-called hockey stick has been discredited. And British scientist Phil Jones has refused to make data available to a mathematician who was seeking it because he feared that person would “try and find something wrong with it.”’

Gee, trying to find something wrong with scientific results?!? Dastardly, eh?

That’s called the scientific method “Dr.” Jones.

The facts, as far as I can ascertain after a whole lot of research, are that:

a) Global warming is having far less of an effect than most of the alarmists have claimed and predicted.
b) It is absolutely unclear what portion of said warming (if any) is attributable to humanity.
c) Some ongoing phenomena, mainly the solar lull we continue to experience, and which is expected to continue for around 30 more years, make warming less of a pressing issue than cooling over that time frame.

So, rather than seeing the glass as half empty, I think the best approach is to see it as half full, and revel in (at a minimum) a breather in which we can develop better technologies both to generate energy and (if necessary) mitigate atmospheric CO2. That is, if the environuts get out of the way and let actually productive and competent people do their thing.

We have something on the order of 40-50 years at a minimum before warming reaches 1998 levels on a consistent basis, in my opinion.

Aren't you accepting the enviro-nuts' premise that atmospheric CO2 must be mitigated?

After all, there is no evidence that atmospheric C02 is even a factor. Or that it is necessarily bad.

It is a fact, for example, that worldwide tree cover has expanded every year since we became able to conduct accurate satellite surveys (c1968). This aside from "we're destroying the rain forest" bullshit.

“Aren’t you accepting the enviro-nuts’ premise that atmospheric CO2 must be mitigated?”

Absolutely not. That is indicated by the (if necessary) qualifier.

I hope enough actual good science is done that we know after the four or five decades I mentioned. ;-)

We sure aren’t there yet.

I would also say, though, that the natural progression of energy generation technology will tend to lessen CO2 emissions as we produce more energy with fission and fusion nuclear processes.

(I should also have added solar, I think it will become very economically viable as the tech progresses...)

A likely process. But, then, the enviros will find some other cause for concern. Their objective is not to less CO2 emissions. It is to reduce the generation and consumption of energy.

Accordingly, I'm disinclined to grant their premises any validity whatsoever.

you say that as though warming was a bad thing. Normally warming means agricultural productivity, prosperity, and joy.

Cooling means war, poverty, and slim customers.

“Do they fear that a web of deception will unravel if their data are made public?”

Global Warming is now in the Post East Anglia Epoch. Global Warming data already has been made public. And their web of deception has unraveled. Michael Mann can go sit on his hockey stick.

“Across the Atlantic, Paul Nurse, head of a scientific group, is moaning about how unfair it is for British scientists to put up with freedom-of-information laws.”

All right. Let’s make believe that the year is 2007 and we don’t already know that global warming is a hoax. You refuse to prove your case, we refuse to go back into the stone age.
