Record snow makes spectacular Yosemite waterfalls

YOSEMITE NATIONAL PARK, Calif. (AP) -- Water, water everywhere - and it's a spectacular sight.

Record Sierra snowfall over the winter now means record snow melt as temperatures rise, swelling Yosemite National Park's iconic waterfalls, streams and rivers to their most turbulent level in years.

Yosemite Falls, the nation's tallest, is spewing enough water to fill a gasoline tanker truck every two seconds. The force of water at Bridalveil Falls across the valley kicks up a mist that clouds the meadow below.

It means that until the peak melt around mid-June, visitors will experience more treacherous beauty in Yosemite than even the travel brochures promise.

You jumped off Glacier point? In a hang glider. I was there for sunrise one morning and saw folks sitting on the outcrops. Just looking over the edge made me queasy.

Good for you. Tons of respect from this chicken.

It’s awesome.

Three steps and you’re 3000 feet in the air. On a good day you can fly across the valley and take a whole visual tour. One a bad day (like on one of my flights) I could only manage one turn to the left after launch, straight to the landing area, make a 180 degree turn and land... over in about 8 minutes or less. ALL of the air in the valley was going down at that time.

I’ve launched from higher mountains and flew a lot longer but you just can’t beat the view of Yosemite. Get there before 8AM and you’ll be able to see the gliders launch.

Most importantly, as you know, you folks weren’t hurt... or worse.

I’m glad they caught the bad guy... unfortunately, he most likely won’t do much time in that crumbling system down there.

Stay safe......

We lived as Sherwood forest golf club. Bet you drove by us on your way to Reedley or Sanger.
Before that I lived in Dinuba and worked for Alpha Beta.
Grew up near Orange Cove, at the lookingup at Sequoia Natl’ Park everyday. How I miss it all here in Kingman.
