The drugs in short supply are already generic. The drugmakers have bigger fish to fry. Drugs still on patent yield much higher profits.

Injectable drugs have to be sterile and meet high purity standards. When they go off patent, they are even less attractive for the drug houses to devote production to.

Sometimes its a matter of the drug being derived from plants. If it requires a lot of a particular plant or the plant is hard to come by, this will raise prices or make the medicine scarce. Sometimes we don’t know how the plant creates the material needed for the drug. There are other reasons for scarcity.
