President Obama paid tribute to America's war dead as laid a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknowns during a Memorial Day service at the National Cemetery in Arlington this morning.
He urged crowds at the ceremony to remember the 'enduring legacy' of generations of Americans who have lost their lives in service, including those who are still fighting in Afghanistan.
In a speech at the White House earlier today he named Army General Martin Dempsey as his new Joint Chiefs of Staff chairman in a new line-up at the top of the U.S. military.
He described America's servicemen and women as 'the best our nation has to offer'. He said: 'They deserve nothing but the best in return, and that includes leaders.'
He and his wife Michelle also held a private breakfast for Gold Star families who had lost their loved ones, before travelling over the Potomac to the National Military Cemetery in Arlington, Virginia.

What a messy little sentence. If he means, "They deserve the best in return", why did he insert "nothing but" in the middle?
Then there's the closing clause, "and that includes leaders". Does he mean they deserve the best leaders in return, or that the leaders deserve the best in return, too?

Yes, it certainly is. The wicked bastard has no place anywhere in the United States. He’s as “American” as a Stalin or Hitler or Mao or any number of nasty dictators from the past. He happens to be in the present.
I think he may have placed a wreath at the tomb of the unknown once before, but can’t remember if it was Memorial Day or Veterans Day. Most of the time he’s been AWOL as far as honoring our military has been concerned.

Actually, I don’t think that Obama has done this every year. He skipped it, at least once.
