War is an ugly thing, but not the ugliest of things; the decayed and degraded state of moral and patriotic feeling which thinks that nothing is worth war is much worse. A man who has nothing for which he is willing to fight; nothing he cares about more than his own personal safety; is a miserable creature who has no chance of being free, unless made and kept so by the exertions of better persons than himself.
John Stuart Mill
ere are 26 million veterans in the United States. This weekend we honor them and our fallen heroes. No one appreciates peace more than a veteran. The crazy peace protestors who are the media darlings and who get all the attention for their juvenile antics have no idea either what is peace or how its achieved. Its not achieved by holding hands with youre your enemies and singing Kumbaya in a circle. Peace is not free, and often comes only with bloodshed. If you need confirmation, just ask our Founding Fathers.

Be sure to click on the 3rd graders singing their tribute to the troops. It's the most touching video ever. Be sure to have a hanky nearby. If you're not moved you're either not an American or you need therapy.

I have been surfing around today taking in the Memorial Day threads, watching tribute videos and I've been moved to tears more than once.
But there is always a realization that gnaws at me on days like this and I've struggled with the right way to describe it.
The John Stuart Mill quote at the top of this thread says it better than I ever could. I can have nothing but disgust and comtempt for those who snear condescendingly at such things as giving thanks for and to those who gave everything so that we all may live free. They did so without condition even for those who marginalize and discount this greatest of all sacrifices.
Saying thanks once a year is not enough, hell, once a day is not enough. How can gratitude be adequately expressed for the gift of freedom? It can't be. All we can do is never forget and hold their memory in our hearts.
It seems wholly inadequate but to all who have served, and on this day all who gave their lives so I may live free, THANKS!!!
