'Killer cucumbers' row between Spain and Germany

Spain has accused Germany of "spreading alarm" and needlessly damaging trade after blaming a deadly E.coli outbreak on "killer cucumbers" imported from Spain.

By Fiona Govan, Madrid 5:33PM BST 30 May 2011

Spain's authorities went on the defensive as countries across Europe cleared their shelves of the offending vegetables insisting that there was no proof the deadly outbreak had been caused by Spanish vegetables.

Leire Pajin, the Spanish Health Minister, noting that no Spanish cases have been reported, urged Germany to speed up its probe and establish proof of what has caused the outbreak.

Germany's allegations "create alarm and affect the producers of a country without any evidence," she said.

Health authorities in Germany confirmed that 14 had died and more than 1,000 infected in the worst outbreak of its kind.

Cases have also been reported in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. In Britain, three people were taken ill, although they are believed to have contracted the infection while in Germany.

Who needs nerve gas when you can use boxes of E. coli-fortified cucumbers?

“Leire Pajin, the Spanish Health Minister, noting that no Spanish cases have been reported,...”

Of course not.

That’s because the Spanish knew the produce was contaminiated and wanted to unload the produce on an unsuspecting population...... Germany.

Go figure.

A BIG TIME investigation needs to be conducted.

Apparently, Spaniards are going offensive:

Spain threatens to sue over killer cucumber claims

31 May 2011 | By Alistair Driver

SPAIN is threatening to seek damages after organic Spanish cucumbers were linked an E. coli outbreak that has resulted in the deaths of at least 14 people, according to the latest reports.

The deaths have occurred in Germany where hundreds of ‘serious infections’ have also been reported.

Three cases have been identified in German nationals in the UK, while others have been reported in Sweden, Denmark and the Netherlands. The European Commission said suspect batches of cucumbers had also been redistributed to France, Austria, Hungary, Luxembourg and the Czech Republic.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) said there is ‘currently no evidence that any affected organic cucumbers from the sources identified have been distributed to the UK’.

The German authorities have identified organic cucumbers from two producers in the Spanish provinces of Almeria and Malaga as one source of the outbreak. A third suspect batch of cucumbers originating in the Netherlands and traded in Germany is also under investigation, while potential sources are also being examined.

The European Commission said results of ongoing investigations should be known by Wednesday.

Officials in Germany said it was still unclear whether the cucumbers were contaminated with the bacteria at source, in transit, or in storage in Germany.

The scandal and the uncertainty surrounding the source have had a devastating impact on sales of salad products from both Spain and Germany.

The German authorities have issued warnings to consumers to stop eating raw cucumbers, tomatoes and salad, while the source of the outbreak remains unclear, while some countries, including Belgium, Russia, Austria and the Czech Republic, have sought to ban Spanish cucumbers.

Spanish politicians have responded by vigorously defending their industry. The country’s Agriculture Minister, Rosa Aguilar, said it was still unclear exactly when and where the contaminated occurred.

She said the damage to the Spanish sector was ‘enormous’ and that the Government would look into claiming damages for losses incurred.

“The image of Spain is being damaged, Spanish producers are being damaged and the Spanish government is not prepared to accept this situation,” she said.

In a stunt reminiscent of former UK farming Minister John Gummer’s infamous decision to feed his daughter a beef burger at the height of the BSE crisis, she ate Spanish cucumber on TV in a bid to show her confidence in the product.

The outbreaks of haemolytic uraemic syndrome (HUS), which results in kidney problems, have been associated with a rare strain of E.coli (O104).

Even though there is no suggestion any infected products have been sold in this country, the FSA is advising consumers to wash fruit and vegetables to ‘help remove germs that might be on the outside’. Peeling or cooking fruit and vegetables can also remove these germs, it adds.

The best defense is a good offense.

OTOH, the German authorities will not roll over and play dead either.

If this originated in Spain, the Spanish are in BIG trouble.

Would not surprise me. Some of our E Coli outbreaks came from immigrant farm workers crapping in the fields. The Muzzies would do it on purpose
