Sarah Palin wants to terminate all energy subsidies, including ethanol
The Los Angeles Times ^ | May 31, 2011 | Andrew Malcolm

Sarah Palin was asked Tuesday about the sticky subject of ethanol subsidies, and she said that not only they should they be squelched but that all federal energy subsidies should be eradicated.

"I think that all of our energy subsidies need to be relooked at today and eliminated," Palin told Real Clear Politics at a coffee shop in Dillsburg, Pa. "And we need to make sure that we're investing and allowing our businesses to invest in reliable energy products right now that aren't going to necessitate subsidies because, bottom line, we can't afford it."

Ever the maverick, Palin was responding was in direct opposition to Mitt Romney, who last week in Iowa, came out in favor of government subsidies for ethanol, the fuel produced from corn and other farm products.

"I support the subsidy of ethanol. I believe ethanol's an important part of our energy solution in this country," Romney told a supporter from West Des Moines on Friday.

Neither former governor has officially stated his or her intention to run for the GOP nomination for president; however, Romney is expected to throw his hat in the ring later this week.

One former governor who has committed to running is Tim Pawlenty. In fact, it was in his statement announcing his candidacy that he also backed the elimination of ethanol and other energy subsidies. Unlike Palin, however, Pawlenty wants to take it slowly.....

Huh? So only ‘suspicious’ people have to prove that they’re Americans?

How do YOU KNOW that she was born in the USA? I haven’t seen her long form birth certificate, have you?

I think they need to be looked at before terminating. Or terminated and then looked at for possible reinstatement.

When I had a car that got 10% less mpg on 10% ethanol, the ethanol program seemed to be a complete waste of government funds and my time (since I had to fill up 10 times for the same mileage that I used to only have to fill up 9 times for).

But now I have a 2007 car that only gets 5% less mpg on 10% ethanol. With the later model car the Ethanol program does appear to be reducing my demand for gasoline by about 1 gallon for every 15 gallon tank.

Of course the question is at what cost? 10% ethanol will have 1.5 gallons of ethanol for every 15 gallon tank. But I still have to buy another half gallon of gas to make up for the mpg drop. How much does that 1.5 gallons of ethanol cost over the cost of 1 gallon of gas saved. And is that extra cost justified by the strategic decision to reduce demand on oil and defund OPEC states?

It costs 1.50/gal to produce the product, but it won't sell for more than 1.00/gal. The gubmint (us stoopid taxpayers) hands over $0.75/gal to encourage the production of a product we don't want because we're too stoopid to know that it's better for us.

The vast majority of ethanol producers are working for the subsidy, and would probably shut down without it.

You could probably get an NEA subsidy and sell that as ‘art’ in San Francisco, too.

You know I’ve never understood the concept of subsidizing ethanol. What sense does it make to turn your food supply into a fossil fuel substitute when there’s tons of fossil fuel you won’t touch?

I mean if we had no more domestic supply that might become a debatable issue but really it’s not. With commodity prices for food going up, up, up it makes no sense to use arable land for government supported BS like ethanol.

What about cutting the subsidies for the parasites—welfare, utility subs, housing, etc.

It’s a bad solution. It takes MORE than the energy in 1.5 gallons of ethanol to make that 1.5 gallons. They claim that it’s made from the parts of the corn that are normally emitted as methane, and then what’s left, the complex carbs, are fed to the cattle, but I don’t KNOW that. I know a lot of corn has gotten diverted to this program and that other grains get squeezed out, and food prices rise.

I have liked the idea of natural gas cars for some time. Yes, you have to harden the gas tank-it can never be allowed to rupture, but we have a virtual ocean of it, it’s the cleanest thing to burn going, and it doesn’t require all that much processing. You can fill your tank at HOME (or away), and I’m quite sure you can go a LONG WAY on a tank of compressed natural gas.

Good for her! Let free markets work, and let capitalism, not government intervention, drive new energy innovations. Here are the facts

Saying the ethanol subsidy should be looked at is not saying it should be eliminated.

Iowa has been turned into a Government Welfare State.

Their love of that Government check is all that matters.
but but Mr Iowa farmer, American food prices are going up because you are giving all your grain to the Ethanol fraudsters.
TO bad America, we LOVE our Government checks.

This is why I haven’t taken Iowa as a serious political weathervain. They only want a Candidate that will keep their checks coming.
