President Barack Obama has proclaimed June 2011 “Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month.”
Painting the LGBT experience as the “story about the struggle to realize that all people can live with dignity and fairness under the law,” Obama highlighted the steps his administration has taken for gay rights, including passing the repeal of the “don’t ask, don’t tell” legislation and giving the LGBT community more access to federal housing programs.
Obama made the same proclamation in June 2010, picking up where President Bill Clinton left off in 2000, when he marked the month “Gay and Lesbian Pride Month.”
President George W. Bush angered many gay rights activists by saying no to the June celebration, and then-Attorney General John Ashcroft’s Justice Department barred a group of employees from celebrating the month.
June was chosen in honor the 1969 Greenwich Village riots at the Stonewall Inn where gay rights advocates clashed with New York City police over alleged discrimination.
Obama noted his administration’s efforts to prevent bullying, especially of gay people, and to raise awareness of the HIV/AIDS virus within LGBT circles.
The gay community does not, however, have the month to themselves. Obama also proclaimed June “National Caribbean-American Heritage Month,” “African-American Music Appreciation Month” and “Great Outdoors Month.”

June has Father’s Day. I will celebrate that and ignore the confused perverts.
Such an odd proclamation for a “Christian” president.
Each year over Memorial Day weekend over 50,000+ queers of all descriptions descend upon our town and our beaches. It is the most disgusting thing I have ever seen. They are all over each other at the beach. That is completely inappropriate behavior for NORMAL couples, much less for sexual deviants. It is to the point that I can’t even go to our beaches to celebrate Memorial Day without being utterly revolted and tempted to bring my Louisvill Slugger and crack open dozens of skulls. The closest I ever came to blows with one of those queers is when he had an American flag, with the red and white stripes replaced with the colors of the gay rainbow. I uprooted it and tore it to shreds. I was wounded three times defending that flag and I would not tolerate seeing it desecrated like that. In some ways I think that is even worse than someone burning our flag.
They had their little “hey everyone look at me, I’m gay and I’m proud!” parades until about 8 years ago when the city council finally had had enough of the debauchery and put their foot down and ceased to grant them to get parade permits. Our town and beaches are very family oriented places and with the large number of retired and active duty military here, quite conservative. This kind of depraved debauchery has no place whatsoever in our town. PERIOD.
Good to see Obama focused like a laser on serious issues of gays and bullying rather than supercilious issues like jobs and the economy. I think he lost his way from the golf course to make this speech.
Just buying votes for the Democrats.
We so need Herman Cain to put them back into the closet.
