Yes, and the federal income tax on earnings is the broadest objective measure out there. Even if there are many, many, many rich people whose estates are such that they are paying little or no taxes on them, that doesn't mean that middle class is paying "most of the tax" in the U.S.. And it certainly doesn't mean that the middle class is paying most of the income tax.
