Pennsylvania man accused of drugging rival husky at Wheaton dog show

A Pennsylvania man charged with drugging a Siberian husky to give his girlfriend’s dog a better shot at winning a suburban kennel club show will go to trial to fight the charges.

Ralph Ullum, 68, is accused of slipping the rival show dog two human drugs — Protonix and Benadryl — during an American Kennel Club show last December at the DuPage County Fairgrounds in Wheaton.

But Ullam’s attorney said his client never gave Pixie the husky any pills — and never needed to because the show already had ended, with his girlfriend’s dog grabbing the best in show prize.

“Mr. Ullum denies he gave any pills to the dog,” Edward Maloney said Thursday following a court hearing.

Could be a drug-sniffing dog. The schools are full of them these days.

You get arrested and a mug shot for slipping a Mickey to a dog in this state? Give me a break. Don't we have anything better to worry about?

The lesson to learn from this story is, Don’t commit any interesting crimes.

I’m not seeing any duplicate thread with this story. Perhaps I missed it.

Drugging another person’s dog—disgraceful.

Sad doggie ping

Huskies are beautiful dogs

(but then, I’m partial to the spitz breeds.)

No doubt among the coolest looking dogs, especially mixed eyes.

Looks like a real winner.

Human tranquilizers do not always interact in quite the same way on canine as human systems.

Ketamine for animals, Vicoden and Perkoset for humans. Ketamine can also be used on humans, but it is not recommended, unless you want to feel like gumby for 12 hours.

I dunno...I’ve heard more than one vet recommendation for a small dose of Benadryl to animals of various sorts with respiratory symptoms. Not sure about being used as a tranquilizer, but I do know a tiny pinch dissolved in a rat’s water bottle was supposedly quite helpful.

No, I don’t know how it worked, or why, and for all I know it was simply voodoo and the final dose was meaninglessly tiny. I do know the rat’s owner swore the vet told her to do it and the rat seemed immensely more comfortable after.

I would hope so. If you had a valuable dog, and were competing it, and upon calling the vet (bills!) to vomit the dog, discovered that pills had been given your dog, I would guess you would be pretty ticked off.

That is definitely arrest worthy. I would be furious. I would lump that in with robbing a house or vandalizing property.

The husky’s owner knew something was wrong when the dog began chanting, “Barack Hussein Obama mmm mmm mmm!”

My wife says that benedryl can be safely used on animals. You learn something new every day.

I have a Cairn who is crazy-neurotic when it comes to thunder storms and fireworks. Long story short, we were on vacation and the poor dog was crazy due to the all the fireworks. I called the vet and she advised Benadryl. Later, we got some doggy “feel good” pills that do a better job. So, yes, you can give Benadryl but the amount is limited (like with all drugs). Just a thought.

Benadryl is often used for dogs, esp to treat allergies (I’ve used it, in fact it was especially helpful after snakebite). It might be likely to make a show dog sleepy and not show well. Not sure what the other drug would do.
I saw this article previously (not here) and some things in the article sounded like this guy may or may not have done what he’s accused of. You have to remember, show people can act like kids, accusing each other of all sorts of things. I don’t know what the history with these people is, but it’s possible that there is a history of things, and who knows the background. I wouldn’t be too quick to believe either one of them.
And the dog could have easily gotten the drugs off the floor or anywhere on the show grounds. They could have fallen out of someone’s pocket or purse, etc. I’ve had my dogs suck up the oddest things (and if you have dogs you know exactly what I mean!).

I got pups for Christmas, and they would sometimes whine and bark at night. A friend recommended Benedryl. I gave them the pill specifically for kids, and it worked like a charm.

I no longer want to strangle my dogs at 3 am, which is a good thing.
